What’s the deal with Mt Hood

Is there skiing still at mt hood? would it be worth it to drive up there from utah for my fall break and do some skiing?

No lifts are spinning or runs being groomed. No park. But there is snow on the mtn. If you feel so inclined you could hike

yes but the lift season ended Aug 30 and the park closed a couple weeks before that.

right now the entire mountain is closed for hiking too because of the huge fires out here. the entire Mt Hood national forest is closed. hopefully the rain will come soon

By october there's fuck all for snow on the glacier. Not really worth the drive. Take your bike to the desert for fall break. You'll have way more fun.

I don't know. If you catch a good day when the corn is just right(or the cats have just tilled up the main lane), a few quick laps and a backflip jump can make a world of difference.

Timberline is also one of the easier(est) hikes to snow.

You can also bike on/around Mt. Hood and skate Windells(there ain't no one around there this time of year).

All of the west coast is fucked with smoke rn and every forest is closed due to fire danger. Not the best time to come

send it OP. Maybe you will have to hike forever to ski mediocre snow. Maybe there will be a freak storm . You are the kind of ski nerd that posts threads on NS in the summer so go skiing

I don't know about this hike forever business. From the Timberline parking lot it shouldn't take you more than an hour and a half to get to the top of the Palmer snow field. I watched at T. Durtschi hike, in ski boots, from the parking lot to the bottom of Windells/HCSC park in about 40 minutes.

Very few ski resorts are going to make you pay for parking in the shoulder season. Is that the make or break for you, if you have to pay for parking? hahaha you're considering a 12 hour drive to ski a patch of snow and paid parking is the thing that would stop you

Technically if you're using resort facilities you're supposed to pay. Think of it like this, hiking the mountain and skiing back down to the bottom = free. Skiing the maintained areas and/or riding the chair lifts = not free.
As you can see there is a bit of a grey area in there.
Like another user commented, resorts are not as likely to enforce these rules during the "shoulder" season.
My advice, don't be in a large group, be discreet, and don't make a scene. If someone from the mountain tells you you can't do what you're doing, be respectful and follow their orders.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but can you just show up to Windells and skate? Also do you just hike up the side of Otto Lang to the snowfield if you want to hike up?
