No race for first to open on East Coast

Resorts have all seemed to move to a more hard open date. Goal to get top to bottom fully open and as many lifts and base areas open to spread out the people

Pros - no white ribbons of death and better coverage/more trails better overall experience when they do open.

Cons - no white ribbon of death. No October fast grass.

maybe they are bluffing.. i saw mount snow stated november 14th. Im curious what Ikon does for their lift ticket model. if its an online reservation etc...

Mount snow will never open early again. Not the Vail way. Not making money early like that.

Haven't heard any concrete plans at Sunday River, and they can usually get top to bottom within 2-3 days of opening and 2 lifts within a week if weather cooperates. Hoping they don't bail out of fear that they'll get swamped with no Killington open, new GM could play it safe but he came from Wildcat which also used to push for early season too

Small resorts in Maine are a different game then the midwest, mostly co-ops/ski clubs with t-bars that serve local towns with super thin profit margins. Could see Boyne maybe scooping one up to be a feeder hill for Sunday River/Loaf but they've had several opportunities and seem more content donating old equipment.

Here in MN you can ski on ice rink snow at troll in early October, and then most resorts open with man made snow late October or early November

Killington is opening November 14th instead of the usual mid-late october opening that they compete with Sunday river for. Usually they end up opening within a day or 2 of each other

Eh Vail bought two resorts in Missouri last year one of them being my old local. If they are buying in St. Louis and Kansas City no one is safe.

I was thinking about scooping up an Indy Pass. $200 and gets you 2 days at each resort. It's got places like Cannon, Bolton, Black, Magic and Suicide Six

Look at where those states are though. Kansas boarders Colorado and Missouri is not far at all. Flying is super quick and driving isn't bad either. Vail buys in those States so you can ski regularly at your local hill then go on a vacation in mainly Colorado or else where with the same pass. Buying those small resorts are like pennies on the dollar for Vail, they just use them to advertise and market to those people/ new skiers and boarders.
Vail doesn't care about people spending money on lift tickets per say, The brunt of their profits are in hotels/ lodging and food. A cheeseburger or hot dog is like $15-20, the alcohol prices are insane as well nevermind the hotel rooms. The markups are crazy; Vail prob pays $5-$9 a bottle for Grey Goose Vodka and a pour/shot costs $14-$16.
Just think of that but in terms of their profit margins for everything such as all other alcohol, food, rentals and hotel rooms. Shit is insane for a family vacation these days.

Yeah idk man the hill is run by the towns parks and rec department, so it's owned by the town. It's not run to make a profit, and it definitely doesn't make one lol, but that's fine cause it's treated as a service to the people and not a way to make money. There are a few hills in Maine like this. I bet it would be a lot harder for vail to buy it out since it's owned by the public.

Killington also has no incentive to open early as the women's FIS race is cancelled. They wont need to blow snow early on superstar and will probably be conservative with it for fear of a shutdown again.

I think they will still pound the shit out of it with snow, they aim every year to keep that open to the end and have a strong base, I think the women’s things a factor but not solely responsible.

A significant portion of profits is through day ticket sales. I mean they are $200 each. Also, vail has really stepped off the real estate game in the past 5-7ish years pretty significantly. When they bought stowe they could have easily bought Stowe Moutain Lodge (now spruce peak lodge) as both the hotel and ski resort were owned by AIG but they only bought the resort. As far as alcohol goes, they pay full price. No discount for kegs or anything but the mark up is so high that it doesn't matter. A lot of places aren't allowed to give discounts on alcohol distribution. A lot of states arent even allowed to give discounts on alcohol consumer sales! Theres no happy hour in VT! Glad i moved back to CO haha

At most there nordic skiing in kansas. Otherwise there are zero lifts in the entire state. But i grew up north east of colorado springs and east of the front range is basically another state: kansas west haha. They even have talked about suceeding from colorado and forming there own state. I think it went to vote and never happened.

eh Killington never really had an incentive before the World Cup either though.

tbh thinking about it if they get a window I could see them opening earlier then the 14th, it’s just they’re going to want trails on the Snowdon Triple, North Ridge, the Gondi, and potentially Superstar all to be ready before they open so they’re saying the 14th. The locals would have gone apeshit if they hadn’t announced this and didn’t open as soon as there was 4in of manmade snow on the ground

I doubt it. I think the State has a lot of say in it. Top to bottom/numerous lifts and base lodges to spread out people.

ive been married since 20 for 17 years now , 3 kids 15,12,8 and never had a problem affording a thing but I can understand trumps been fucking America and the economy in her ass for years now.

congrats on the home that’s a nice achievement and my original post was no shot at you just f in around.

I can no longer do car camping with 3 kids and a wife, but I have talked the wife into when the kids have a sitter sleeping in The back of Jeep on a memory foam pad and sleeping bags. Got some minor cooking and heating hardware but nothing serious, some morning tours and resort camping. For me solo it’s great it’s how I hit the number of ski days I do.
