hey this is an essay i had to do for gym theroy class, its based on an article in Freeskier mag, about a highschool with skiing(freestyle) courses, just thought maybe some of u might be interested peace....
Carrabasset Valley Academy (CVA) is not your average high school, while most other students would be rushing to get out of schools by 3 pm students at CVA are ready to hit the slopes. Located in Carrabasset Valley, Maine, three things that CVA will never be short of are snow, good students and high quality programs. Not only does CVA have world class programs but it can also boast the best mogul program in the country (says the USSA), the biggest skate park in Maine and one of solitary schools that has a world-class freeride, racing, and freestyle ski programs. With only 20 to 25 students enrolled in the full-time program you can be sure that the class sizes aren’t too big.
Last year at CVA they sent six kids to the mogul nations, three finished in the top ten. Ever heard of Bode Miller, Kirsten Clark, Brenda Petzold, Emily Cook, and Boyd Easley? , well you guessed it that’s just a sample of the CVA alumni. Ron DeGravio, CVA’s Director of Marketing and Communications says, “The kids are psyched and push each other all the time, that’s a long way”. The facilities on hand also give CVA’s athletes an edge, of course anyone would be better if they had a forementioned skate park, trampolines with harness rigging, an indoor rock climbing wall, and a indoor multipurpose court with running track along with weight training and aerobic facilities.
CVA’s Programs and staff are some of the most admireable in North America . Their ALPS program (Alpine Leadership Pursuits for Skiers and Snowboarders) combines the college preparatory academics of CVA with teaching of outdoor skills critical to big-mountain and backcountry skiing around the world. Led by Sam Punderson, an educator with 15 years of backcountry ski experience and the former Program and Athletic Director at the Academy at Adventure Quest, the ALPS program also includes two trips to alpine regions around the world such as Brownsville, Vermont, with a focus on international and adventure New Zealand; LaGrave, France; British Columbia; Canada; or Alaska. Punderson is joined by Glenn Eddy who anchors the freestyle program; he is a former US Ski Team member and World Cup competitor (he also has multiple coaching titles to his name, the biggest being the Eastern and Northern freestyle coaches chairmen).
In case we forget CVA’s is still a school and while athletics play a major role in educational activities there, it isn’t all fun and games. Their track record for college placement is top of the line, but ultimately, getting a college education is what going to school is all about, even if you have the best skate park in Maine and one of the best ski academies in North America waiting for you when class is over.
