OPPOSITION to the Da Vinci Code?

angels and demons was almost entirely the same frigging book. and the davinci code really wasnt that good. has anyone read any bukowski? i just read ham on rye and post office, i thought both of them were wayyy better than all the pop fiction shit

I read both the Da Vinci Code first and Angels and Demons second and I have to say that the stories are nearly identical. He uses the same phrases multiple times in the book, which annoys me. Overall the actual writing could have been done by an 8th grader. However, I disagree with you saying that it was poorly researched. Regardless of how opposed to Dan Brown or his books you are, I dont think you can deny how amazing all the different artifacts he accutatly put in his books.

perhaps my earlier statement was a little harsh. I suppose reading one book is better than reading none. At least it's a step away from T.V. and Movies. Not that I don't enjoy those, but...

but still, hardly anyone has touched on my main point that to appeal to everyone, or as many people as this book seems to do, it just can't be that good. its possible, but highly unlikely. what people aren't realizing that is that this goes beyond snobbishness, and being a 'rebel' - this is about reasoning.

regardless of how good it really is, it's become something for stupid people to read so they sound intelligent. i agree with you, most things that become THAT popular and trendy aren't usually that good.

you titled your thread opposition to the da vinci code. You asked if others refused to read it because so many people like it.

If you're saying you don't want to waste your time reading a bad book, and that the books mass appeal leads you to believe the book sucks, that hardly makes sense.

I was like you. I avoided it for at least a year because of all the hype. Then one day I picked it up off my girlfriend's desk, read 10 pages, and finished it the next day. Same thing happened with Angels and Demons. Factually correct or not, Brown's books are fun to read, and read quickly.

Don't punish Brown or the books for how people today follow trends like lemmings, and can be so easily amazed by a book like that.

As a reader, here's one thing I noticed. I never wanted to put down da vinci code. Why? Brown filled the book with cliffhangers. Every chapter would end with something like "it all goes back to that one time when I was a child and...I don't have time to finish that sentence now, I'll tell you next chapter" So he's constantly introducing questions and dangling them in front of you so you want to keep reading for the answer. Is this a cheap trick? Maybe. Did I realize it while I was reading the book? Yes, but I enjoyed reading it anyway. If you've ever studied music, a common technique is to create tension in a phrase, and when it gets to the point of the final note that the ear is suspecting, you back off, and go some other direction with the music. Eventually you come back to the same point, and possibly go elsewhere again. When the ear finally gets to hear the theme end on the note it was expecting, it is satisfying. I think it's the same concept.

Anyway, you've taken the time to make a thread about the book, why not just bite the bullet and read a little bit? If it sucks, or you don't like it, you can put it down. But maybe you'll like it, and then won't you be glad you gave it a chance?

^ see i think thats all bullshit. i guess i have a lot of respect for innovation, not for literary equations. my point is that seems like the same old shit, the stuff that i thought would be in there, the same stuff in the romance novels that line the 'book' section in the grocery stores.

i don't consider myself a literary buff, i haven't read tons of stuff. i think an analogy to movies is warranted here: and this book seems to be on par with every hollywood movie that i have no interest in ever seeing.

are these extremely critical and opinionated comments on my part? yes, yes they are. but hey, thats the way it goes.

I don't read large books often as i rarely have time. So i don't look too deeply into them, and don't really care about how much research or how the book is structured etc etc. I enjoyed it because it was just an interesting read, and it kept me entertained, although at points i have to admit that it became slightly tedious. Generally a decent book i think.
