Read this book. It's by a war correspondant who has seen the reality of war and been to hell and back many times over the last 30 years. He's seen countless terrible atrocities committed, he's been shot, tortured, and imprisoned and he gives an unbiased and true account of the perversion and seduction of war. Basically I've come to realize that half the killing countries do in wars is murdering innocent people, and that these killers will never face justice. The point of this book is not that we should never fight a war, because some are necessary, but that the reality of war is much different than we think. Imagine if news channels were allowed to cover the real fighting, the cold-blooded executions, the raping, pillaging, and genocides that have marked most every war for the last hundred years. Maybe we wouldn't be so eager to go to war.

I sincerely doubt he is capable of giving an 'unbiased account' of war given what he's been through, but he would certainly give us a unique point of view that we would otherwise be oblivious to.

Um so basically you're saying the only people who can give an unbiased view on war are people who haven't been through anything? The reality of war is that it is hell, its a systematic slaughter of the enemy and you cannot argue with that

Both sides of every war do attrocious things, some even worse than killing innocents. It's a part of war most people don't udnerstand. I think war is starting to becoem like it was before the first world war. It is a noble and honorable thing to fight for ones country and soldiers are all heros. The lessons we learnt from world war 1 have been forgotten.

davidh, it's not that pictures of caskets are too gruesome- it's just that people have a funny way of not wanting to support a war any more after seeing a bunch of boxes with good old American boys inside.

Thanks Kamikaze, I was going to point that out.
At this point in our existence, war is necessary. You can see that some people are trying to shed this archaic behavior from our backs while some others resist.
It's an ancient method of resolving differences, establishing control, and displaying power. Until those who possess power accept and believe they can control the population without killing and manipulation, they will never be able to see a peaceful future.
