wood vs foam

alot you punks out there like to proclaim wood is better than foam....lets hear about it.

FOAM cores are light, durable, not to mention far more consistant from tip to tail. manufactures can control the density, swing weight and damping far more with foam than with wood.
Wood cores kill trees, are heavy and sluggish, don't spin or rotate as easily either.
you like wood, go ski the trees!

Foam cores can't hold up to the impact that a woodcore can.

Foam cores are marginally quicker, and only in instances when the ski is lighter at the tips, which now in many cases wood cores are just as light or lighter than a ski such as the teneighty. Sidecut and stiffness determined quickness far more than weight anyway.

Foam cores kill foam monsters. Foam monsters are a valuable part to any nations economy and without them, you couldnt have foam insulted coolers. So unless you don't like foam insulated coolers, dont buy a foam cored ski.

Are foam cores as bad as people say they are on this site?
No, not even close?

Are foam cores beter for freestyle/big mountain skiing?
No, they arent because it involves far too much impact and they lack the resistance to that type of force. Im sure at some point the technology will be improved, but right now its just not there yet.

and stop reciting the salomon brochure, because your post is a carbon copy of what you woudl hear from a rep that neglects to mention the downfalls of the foam.

uhm skis with foam cores: most of the salomon line. rossignol also uses a hybrid core made of some foam.

no foam: every other company on the market.

I think that foam is the future. But until the make it last longer, I'm sticking with wood.

foam is good in race skis/ powder skis (for guys who don't jump) because you CAN get a more consistent controllable flex out of it. And the torsional stiffness to lateral stiffness ratio of foam core skis rocks. but...

foam sucks in freeride skis. I admit that when you first get a pair of 1080s, they are pretty wicked skis. But as time passes and you continue to jump and impact on the skis, the foam breaks down alot quicker than wood will. 1080s (I use 1080 because it's the example I'm most familiar with) will break down and become floppy noodles within 2 seasons. Wood is much more resiliant to large impacts and will last much longer than wood core skis.
Foam is good, I admit. If you're a racer.
Oh and you say that foam is lighter, but consider this. All the superlight touring skis (Tuas ect.) are wood core. Now why is that?

actually, salomon's race skis are the only skis they make with some wood in the core. the rest of the line (except kids which in some they use polyurethane) are spaceframe (i.e. foam).

foam cores have a higher modulus of elasticity but their resillence is lower so they break down faster leading to fatigue. i dont know why salomon sells it for so much its not that expensive to engineer or manufacture

Whoever up there said foam is better in race skis is clearly mistaken. Foam is nowhere near as damp as a wood core, making it(foam) unreliable at speed.

Show me a WC race ski with a foam core, I'd love to see one...

foam is good but after about a year and a half the cores start to break down and you get super flimsy skis. People like me who cant afford to get new skis every 2 years get wood cores.

u saying foam is lighter then wood is actually not true in all instances, some foams are pretty heavy. and some wood cores are light like aspen and birch, plus wood can take more shit. And most of all if water gets into a foam core your fucked, like when they mounted my friends skis they forgot to seel the screw and water leaked in and then the whole ski cracked. Wood can hold the water and keep on going.

DB skis have a foam core but i would trust it because it is combined with a carbon fiber support system, but that the only foam core ski i would ever buy again. they just suck they don't hold up over the years and the foam breaks down. pluse they are moreliky to break due to weakness when the foam breaks down (only takes a year if you ride them hard)
