edge progression

What, if anything, are companies doing to try to beef up edges, are there companies whose edges truely hold up better than others? I don't know if I have seen a pair of skis where the edges don't crack, it's just the nature of the beast.

Rossi is making some progressions by putting a set of edges on the middle of the ski to distribute weight between 4 edges instead of 2. But I thnik the way edges crack and break is when someone landes with their ski at an angle and not flat, this way all the weight of the skier is on the edge and as a result it crack after repeated abuse. I think the edges need to me supported better. If you made it so the edge coulding be pushed into the ski sidewall and core and whatnot, there would be no problem of having the edge crack or bend

I saw an elan twin tip two years ago withthe extra edge in the middle of the ski but then never saw it on the market. I don't know if I'm a believer in that concept of extra edges, will it reall take force away from those outside edges? but good to see rossi is trying, waht line/s will they put that in?

lots of companies are using edges from the company that produces them for snowboards. its a harder steel, which means that it is harder to sharpen, but can withstand a lot more damage. i think thats atomic thats doing the edge in the middle thing isnt it?

Armada and Surface skis have Rockwell edges, which are just really thick, really strong steel.

rails dont do everything to your edges....when i got new skis i only hit the pipe that day because there werent rails up...this was 2 years ago and my edges actually cracked because of the icy pipe

rockwell isnt a type of edge, its an edg rating system. such as, a rockwell 2 isnt a strong as a rockwell 3. but good try trying to sound smart.

i think its more about the contruction of the ski then the edge. I can't think of a good analogy right now though.

ok, think of it like if you are trying to get through a door, but your friend is pushing from the other side. The edge is like the door and you are the rail and your friend is the ski. The stronger you are, the longer you'll be able to keep your friend from opening the door and ths breaking the edge.

rockwell hardness tester is a press than exerts a certain amount of pressure on the metal, then you place the same dia metal ball into the wholw left behind and measure from the top of the metal ball to the top of the surface with a depth micrometer the higher the ball sticks out the lower the number the harder the metal, maybe that will clear it up for yall

the triplets, maybe only the urban model, will have 2 extra stips of 'edge' underfoot to spread out the weight on the edge...

And the edge cracking has nothing to do with that^!

the edge cracked on my chronics and i havent even been riding them for a month. however, it is only cracked and is still staying in damn well.

dynastar should really do something about there whole edge problem almost everyone that i know that has skiied TMs pretty hardcore have complained of cracking edges i personally wanted to get the crichtons next year but now im rethinking that because of dynastars whole edge problem because i love rails so i think i might pick up the STLs or scratch FS's

Ya man, everyone I know who bought chronics ahd edge problems, foot long gaps uner the boot and whatnot. I think line was bullshitting when they said thicker edges = better. I've had my skis for a year, while my friends who have chronics have busted after 3 months. No jokes guys, chronics are horrible skis. Just ask my friends.

I just got back from some urban and one of the dudes who only had a little crack in his chronics lost the entire outside edge of his leading ski. It was wack!

thats like riding a skateboard and getting pissed cuz the trucks get scratched when you 50-50. its something that will always happen no matter how durable they make the edges, its just the way it is. when you fling 150 pounds onto a metal rail going 20 miles and hour or so, shits gonna get busted.

Elan does sell a twin tip with an extr edge down the middle, but it doesnt my friend from cracking his outer edges. Also Public Enemies have massive edges.

almost all ski companies are using the hardest steel available. its which actual steel company made them that counts. a.k.a. they are all using the same meatals and alloys to create the most sturdy edge possible. depending on how well the steel is actually made is what counts. when steel is made they use a variety of diff techniques to harden the steel by combineing carbon and other matrierials to the steel. I'll be honest im not totally sure how they do it but I think that at some point they dip they red hot steel into water that has high amounts of carbon in it which makes the carbon bond to the steel makeing it stronger..... or somethin like that. its called quenching and tempering. anyways the point is its not the ski industry, they are getting the best steel they can without spending $1000's.

I think the edge problem may be due to the heated presses. Ski factories use heat to cure the epoxy faster when making skis and this heat may affect the metal edge. Maybe some factories (such as dynastar, etc.) use a much higher heat which can remove the temper of the steel - weakening it.

The wires connecting the edges across the ski is a good idea but that only prevents edge pull-out and not cracking. But edge pull-out can be prevented with good craftsmanship - you don't need extra reinforcement. Most companies just worry about speed and don't pay attention to edge detail.

I like the wire idea, really it's the pull out that is annoying, the cracking is just the precurser. 'same as scrtaching your trucks on a skateboard'... I don't think so, yeah it's bound to happen but how can it be delt with to not ruin the ski with the pull out?

Hey SKI BUM I have 11 pairs of twin tips and the LINE Chronics are the best out of all of them. That is a bunch of BULLSHIT the LINE SKIS and the Chronics have some of the toughest edges on the market. What the fuck are your friends doing droping there skis out of an airplane and hit black top. LINE Chronics are the shit and so are LINE SKIS!! Buy LINE SKIS because skiing needs a future!

OK, if you had read a few of my other posts in ski equiptment, I stated that it was a joke that started one boring afternoon last week. The sad part is, I've read a few posts from people who are startign to believe line edges are shit, just because me and one other guy made some posts about it. I just wanted to rpove a point that people shouldn't believe everythign on NS. One or 2 people can totally destroy a skis reputation and its shitty.

I also like how in your entire post you put BULLSHIT and LINE in caps. I actually like liens though, it was between chronics and fugatives this year for me.

my mike nicks have huge edges, and they are bombproof. By Rossis from last year skied one shitty rain alot, many urban sessions, and alot of tar. Not even a crack yet, and the ski looks like shitttttt
