Yea the 10th mtn brigade just learned how to ski as part of their special unit training, and then some of the members of the unit founded vail, and as far as who invented skiing, it was the Norwegians. Norwegians invented skiing about 5000 years ago. They used skis to hunt over snow covered terrain. They didn't really use ski boots or bindings instead they just strapped their feet to long heavy pieces of wood. The original alpine skiing is more similar to modern cross-country skiing. Skiing spread to Scandinavia and Russia so they could use it as winter transportation.

I believe the oldest skis found are from Norway, or at least somewhere in Scandanavia.

i actually did I report for school a few years back on skiing and part of the report was the history, from what I found it was a long time ago in Scandinavia / norway region and it was natives who used them to go fast over the deep snow and chase down animals and eat them! you gotta love that

the scandinavians invented x country skiing as a means of transportation and then converted it to downhill.

As many may know, when skiing first started you had to stop to turn. So the creater of modern skiing, Sondre Nordheim of Morgedal, Norway, invented sufficient straps so that the skis would stay on durring turns and jumps. That was the telemark ski and it evolved into the skis we use now.
