Here's a little tibit I wrote today for my English class. I hope you like it.
Skiing is a community.
Together, as Skiers, we are always in the search for the ultimate joy of that perfect run.
We wake up early, when the sun barely shines, we try to get that first chair on the lift, when the frost bites at the tip of your nose, and we all ski down, having the time of our lives, and trying to get that ultimate joy.
As you get down that first run, there's a group of people at the bottom, nobody knows each other's names, backgrounds, or beliefs, but that doesnt matter, you're all stoked, and gearing up for another run. If you have two planks strapped to your feet, you're one of us.
As you get on the rickety double chair, that probably hasn't been maintained in a decade or two, you start talking with the guy who happened to be next to you in line, first you might just ask about their skis, or they might ask about where you're going to take your next run, and you keep on chatting. Then you realize you've found another joy, not a powder run, but a new friend to spend the day with, and to share that joy.
At the top of the old lift, the two of you start hiking up to a peak where you heard a rumor about the best snow. As you’re hiking up the mountain, trudging through the deep powder; you look up, and notice another pair of people, hiking up the same bootpack, clearing track in the fresh powder. At the top you stop, ask them what line they're taking down this hidden peak, and they tell you, and ask if you want to come with them. Then you realize, you've done it again, found more like minded friends, and people to share that ultimate joy with, because the joy of skiing is not just shredding that perfect powder run, carving the lowest turn, or hitting the biggest air; but it’s the people you share it with, who will enjoy these moments right alongside you.
