Learned or learnt?

I always thought "learned" was an adjective, while "learnt" was the past tense and past participle of the verb "learn". However, according to the internet, both are acceptable for the past tense. English is a beautiful language, but sometimes it makes me wonder...

I think that "learned" sounds better when speaking of learning something in the past tense. I try to be correct with my tenses in writing through, as we all should be. Was just surprised to learn that "learnt" and "learned" could be used interchangeably. Lots of words are like this, but I didn't think this one was. Sorry for caring too much or whatever. Roast me and call me stupid, pussies.
