This winter is being called the “ winter of great divide” , low precipitation in the south but supposedly cold as fuck up here in the north and lots of precip! So cheers m8s 🍺, Augusts coming to an end, ski shops are wrapping up their other seasonal businesses and stocking their stores

I like reading the almanac every year when it comes out. I look at it like The predictions of Nostradamus , so vague that basically any prediction can come true, however, they are forecasting a snowy winter this season so there should be snow for all! Snow at the resorts, and much needed snow for touring which is gonna be big this year.

You guys can believe whatever fake bullshit you want, but nobody can predict yearly snowfall. I've seen articles that say itll be hot, itll be cold, itll be wet, itll be dry, you can't predict weather that far ahead of time, we know itll be winter and we know it will snow and thats about it. Its august, just relax on your sadface and enjoy the rest of summer/fall.

I get extremely annoyed by people who talk about winter in the middle of summer, I understand you love skiing and winter, but when you enjoy the summer, the winter comes that much faster.

I used to be the guy who would just think about winter all summer and be so bummed it wasnt winter, then I realized I could enjoy summer and my life completely changed, nothing wrong with a bit of diversity in your life. Sorry for shitting on your stoke, probably wasn't necessary but it's too late now.

@powderbuoy has about an 85-90% success ratio in calling wasatch storms about 2 weeks out from what I've seen.

Yeah there is a very consistent pattern that is easy to observe, but they can't predict the exact day or the amount of snow, but reading some patterns to see a low pressure system entering the general area of Utah isn't exactly magic or anything.

summer, I kinda like it, but as you realize, I live for winter, that’s my time for me and for me to be with and do with and for my family, I work every goddamn day in the heat 5a-8p 7 days a week so I can do for my fam and employees and ski every day from nov14-apr1.
and if you got a problem with people liking winter in the summer, don’t forget those who like summer in the winter! I’m r those who like spring in the fall! There’s so many people out there for you to dislike for such worthy reasons and should probably look inward rather than outward to solve this so called issue.

I am a nerd that was supposed to be the joke. I also do not dislike you or anyone who likes winter, another assumption that's just not true. I just think these almanac predictions are stupid and I've thought that since I was a diehard skier kid too, thats really the only reason im shitting on this thread.

As for being a rep of NS, i dont work for NS my only affiliation is as head moderator, what I said and do is not reflective on NS as a company.

This is inherently false. Don’t listen to any forecasts more than 3-4 days out? Then why is the annual rainfall in the farmers almanac so useful that scientists use it daily? You can identify so many patterns in that thing and it’s actually pretty accurate. How do you think we know about El Niño and La Niña so we’ll...?

OP is talking about reading the farmers almanac (an accurate forecasting tool) and you’re treating him like he’s stoked on a 10-day forecast for a blizzard on the local news or something. Way different...

Farmers almanac has always been a "hype" source for winter predictions, gets people stoked for like a week and then we actually forget about it til winter because it doesn't actually predict anything outside of patterns you are talking about. I'm just saying its a stupid thing to look at and get your hopes up about, can you not agree on that?

Maybe you haven’t lol but that doesn’t mean other scientists don’t find it useful. Personally, I know a lot of the environmental sciences where I live rely on that data pretty heavily because we’re in an extremely arid area and that info is clutch.

This still doesn't mean you can predict weather accurately outside of 3-5 days, you can guess and be decently accurate, but any meteorologist will tell you their job is educated guessing outside of 5 days.

Look, I plan my skiing 99% of the time the morning of, and do my best to schedule the 3+ day trips etc the best I can or just take what I get
Also you cannot just look at that map and be like boom this is crap, the actual book breaks it down into regions and bi weekly forecasts, and they’re usually “vaguely” accurate or better, and it was just really nice to wake up and see a forecast of cold, which us lower elevation and snow makersdependant mountains rely on, as well as snow in the forecast, it was a nice morning that’s all. News today is so miserable, I was just happy to see this...

all I know is it's supposed to snow above 7500 feet in southwest montana early next week, won't be much but good to have moisture in the system to lower the forest fire risk
