I don’t mean for my title to trigger anyone and I usually keep my glass half full as this an industry that thrives off of optimism, but for the first time in my life I’m not looking forward to winter. There’s so much uncertainty about the season ahead that I haven’t felt the stoke that I normally start to feel around this time of the year. Aside from the inevitable protocols that have been put in place, as a resort employee I’m going to be dealing with a greater than usual number of assholes as a result of this new normal. I could do without the amenities and accommodations that most guests prioritize when planning a ski vacation, but I’m afraid of loosing a lot of my employee perks which will make my job less enjoyable and appealing. We price gouged the shit out of our tickets and passes compared to last year in an attempt to keep people out (and to make up for financial loss) which we’re certainly going to receive some backlash for, but at the same time we still want visitors to come so it’s a double edge sword. Our CEO just resigned so everyone is on the edge of their seats hoping that they won’t loose their jobs or that we won’t sell out to “Big Skiing.” On top of that, I won’t get to ski nearly as much as I’ve had these last few seasons since I won’t be allowed to keep my gear in the office like I normally am. And if we have to put a cap on how many skiers we can have on the mountain per day it’ll be even worse.
I don’t fear COVID-19 to the point where it keeps me in my shell and holds me back from living my life, I’ve been getting outside a lot and even got the chance to travel to Alaska for a bit before returning to work this past week. But living in a destination resort town we get a lot of arrogant assholes from far and wide who flock into town and have zero respect for the locals or community as a whole. We’ve already had a fair share of them this summer, I’m talking guests who are throwing food and drinks at servers over their refusal to comply with the mask ordinance. All it takes is one individual to ruin it for everyone and I fear in the winter it’s only going to get worse. At this point I just hope that we have a decent snow year and are able to make it through the season in peace without any outbreaks. I hope I’m not the only one who feels this way.
