Anybody gone backpacking in grizzly-infested areas? What guns did you bring.

Back on topic, i think its more likely that a 9mm will give a grizzly a hint. I dont care if the grizzly is the size of a vw beetle, a 9mm round hits pretty damn hard.

TnskiNot exactly grizzly infested country but I did practically bump into one in 09 about 50' away and no gun but 2 camera's. I was baked out of my skull and stood there like I was watching discovery Channel till reality hit but it ran away so why carry all that extra weight if they just run away.

That being said IMO nothing asides from a slug fired from a shotgun is going to be worthy your time.

a hard hitting magnum like .357 or 44 has potential to do the job but you only have 5-6 shots to fire

as for 9mm or .45 , those will be less than adequate against a grizzly

safarisamHi!! I do all the time. I carry bear spray and a glock 20 10mm. When I’m hunting I have my 7mm rifle but still have the glock 20 at my hip as I hunt in griz country.
Your bear spray is your first defense. I’d rather not have to kill a griz (they’re a protected species) but if the spray fails then I’m packing heat. You can still buy the spray out west, in MT sportsmans sells it, along with mom and pop outdoors shops. The ski/bike shop I worked in even sells it.

I can't find it but I know North American Rescue had it on their Instagram this year. The point is, even if you're good with your shots, it might not be enough. Bear spray is what you need. Gun for backup.

iFlipI've spent some fairly significant time backpacking in grizzly territory. My firearm of choice was a Marlin 45-70 Guide Gun paired with Buffalo Bore ammunition. The guns you mentioned will basically tickle a grizzly. When you're in grizzly territory you want something with true stopping power. If you surprise a bear and it is coming at you, you want to be able to stop a charge. Most firearms are not up to this task. Do some reading on the topic if you're serious about selecting a firearm that will actually protect you.

Monsieur_PatateFeel free to research studies on the topic, as many have already stated, bear spray is proven to be the most effective in case of an attack. You don't want a gun, you want bear spray if you care about your survival.

It's also safer outside of an attack so idiots who can't safely handle firearms don't risk injuring themselves or other people.

The bear lives, plus a spray bottle is way lighter to carry hiking than a rifle.

It really is a no-brainer decision.
