What happened to edits

I see all these insta posts from hood or wherever but I’ve hardly been seeing many edits. Maybe I haven’t been looking hard enough but I wish all these people posting on insta would make some good 3 minute edits. Especially those comp jock kids up there, they could make some really good shit

People have been posting everything on instagram for years, aint nothing new, people "think" they get less views and exposure when they make a real edit, when in reality the viewership/amount of edits declined because of this exact idea.

Ya I don’t understand it at all man. I actually think its kinda sad in a way because ig clips lack the “soul” (for lack of a better term) that full length edits have.


Even minute long ig edits just seem to lack substance even when they are good. I see ig edits as like a picture book for kids whereas full length edits are like reading a novel.

The reason why I like NS so much is that I know that when I post an edit on here its gonna be people who are core skiers that will truly appreciate what im doing instead of some kid I went to highschool with that doesnt ski or some kid on yt that likes skiing but isnt a “real” skier as much as I hate saying that term. Im not saying you need NS to be a real skier or that those people don’t matter or shouldn’t see what I post. NS is just kinda the shit I like I guess

Yeah dude any dumb kid can post a shitty clip to insta but it takes a lot more effort to make an edit- hence why we have hardly any edits left.

This is untrue, videos on NS are down significantly since instagram introduced video (2015? ish). Really, theyre down since the blow up social media, trending with the overall usage of NS.

see the issue here is that you assume all edits will be posted on NS.

other places to find full edits besides NS. I would shamelessly plug my hood edits from this summer, but like I said you gotta look harder.

EDIT: I also wouldn’t assume all edits are advertised on Instagram

Why wouldn't you post your video to the most used ski website on the internet? Don't you want people to see your edit? This attitude doesn't really help the health and livelihood of edits either, why does your edit need to be "under the radar"? Its not cool when nobody sees your edit man.

Only if you don't want anyone to see it. If you don't want people to see your edit thats fine, just doesn't make sense.

Sorry for the triple post, i forgot to address this. You're assuming that me (previously content director of NS) didn't have eyes on all parts of the internet for videos every day, it was part of my job and there are significantly less edits not only from high level skiers/producers but also from regular joes, I didn't just make it up.

I make my edits and it’s other people’s choice to reshare my content. everyone’s attention span is too damn short for me to care if people see them or not. honestly I’m just lazy.

Gotcha, ya NS definitely has a small crowd that likes SD stuff now, back then it might have been smaller. I mean even all the way back to 2016 was already too late for you to experience what it used to be like posting videos on NS. In say, 2010, everyone posted their videos on NS and if you didnt, nobody saw it because it was pre-instagram/when fb was still small and social media wasnt really a thing. Edits on NS used to thrive and instagram ended that, but all good things come to an end.

Rating/score/whatever you want to call it of a video is completely determined by the community, maybe you got downvoted/less up voted by the audience but the system was never manipulated to choose HD videos.

bias toward HD chosen for top ranks? ok, maybe 5 years ago, but today everyone seems to prefer hvx (yes, i know it’s 720p so not true SD) and dvx over HD. besides, top videos on NS haven’t been “chosen” by some curation crew for over 10 years, they’re ranked by the algorithm based on views, votes, and comments.

but most importantly, sounds like you stopped posting your edits here because they weren’t “top ranked”? dude, that’s so far from the point of making videos and it just makes you sound entitled.

i hope you upload future videos to NS

tbh, i also think cell phone camera technology outside of social media altogether contributes to the death of the edit. used to be you needed a camera and a filmer to shoot skiing, so logically the objective is to make an edit or similar video. with a cell phone camera, the objective has shifted to just shooting single clips (whether or not for socials), a proper filmer/editor doesn’t have to be involved, etc. i’m not saying you can’t make an edit out of cell phone clips, but typically people just aren’t doing that.

i mean, ive made a few full length edits that are like 90 percent filmed on phones but edited with more effort than using fucking imovie and they ended up pretty good, at least to my standards.

NS gotta keep their click numbers up which I understand.

I got ego checked and it seemed the broader audience didn't really take a interest, plus i hate figuring out algorithms and "best time to post bullshit". This is what led me to change and not care what people think of my edits or if people even see them. I enjoy making vids for myself. I let them go on Youtube, people will choose to reshare the vid or talk about it if they wish. Occasionally ill share something on my story on gram but not much.

Maybe ill upload to NS but probably not as I just dont go on here that much, i'm only here now cuz my email is sending me alerts. Appreciate the convo, i gotta take a dump.

again, nobody is choosing video of the day, for at least eight years it’s been chosen as to top performing video according to the algorithm. so basically every VOTD is community-chosen. but it’s fair NS uses discretion in what they post and promote on the gram.

it seems like you’ve got the right mindset in making vids for yourself. it also sounds like you’re saying you were offended that your videos didn’t do well enough on the site that you stopped posting them. that’s just a little contradictory, IMO if you say you’re really just doing it for yourself you wouldn’t give a fuck either way how well it gains traction on NS. so why not just post it anyway if you don’t give a fuck?? someone is bound to enjoy it, and just that one person is worth it even if you’re not getting top votes and comments...

Members online =/= the traffic of the site. The traffic on NS has been slowly declining, but we are by far the most visited ski media site that exists right now, NS is really the only online community for freestyle/newschool skiing, r/skiing doesn't count and tgr is old crusty dudes yelling at each other about touring. I'm not saying posting on NS will get you "exposure" but you can embed a video you posted on vimeo, youtube, facebook, instagram, etc its not like you only have to post it on NS.

NS VOD has been selected by an algorithm since VOD started, NS rating/front page listing/etc has always been determined by the community rating.

Posting on social media is a different beast. You're right, NS posts on social media to get people to visit the site, but that's how one gets almost half of the traffic to NS, with the way the internet works right now, people just pull out their phones and check their social media. In 2010, a vast majority of NS users turned on their computer and type the url into the browser. Times have changed, so NS had to change how they get people on the site. This is unavoidable as NS needs visitors to the site to keep the site running.

There is certainly editorial choice when it comes to which videos we share (altho, we shared videos that were popular with the community) and the truth is we can't share everyone's video. The choice for which video to share had absolutely nothing to do with HD or SD, I'm fairly certain since 2016, NS has shared plenty of SD videos on their social media channels.

i enjoy what im doing and how i provide my content. yes i was "offended" but everyone changes. i know i don't have a career in filming. i'm about the "set it and forget it" mentality. if something is that good, word of mouth will do just fine for me.

yeah, well the community is better off no matter what for having your stuff around the site. you can still set it and forget it posting your stuff on NS. you can still upload to youtube. you can still choose not to promote it yourself. but regardless of that, you should post your videos here!

it's cause people stopped using biggie in edits, guicci mane killed the edit!

but in seriousness, traffic shifting to more quick access views of insta or whatever pops into their fb or snapchat feed is what did it. not only are people trending more toward short views, but it seems it's one and done as well, where as 10 years ago you'd rewatch edits all the time. there are still awesome pro level edits, but has the quality of amateur content diminished? cause that's what really drove it before.

The good ole waterfall content marketing. You see pros and companies do much more of this. They show a clip a day to get clicks to the edit. Social is a great way to tease and build hype, which you couldn't do as much on NS; possibly because it's not as easy to digest content. Loading a page and watching an ad is not as easy as a quick scroll until something catches your eye and causes you to dive in.

Ive been posting my edits here since 2010 and they only get 10-15 views anyway and maybe a comment at best.
Nobody really watches edits anyway on NS, unless they are sponsored or promoted.

I really wish people took the time to make both. I honestly find it really enjoyable to make 20 insta posts a year that are 20-50 seconds and then making 3, 2-4 minute edits at the end of the year. It cures my summer boredom and shots look completely different when you come back to them 4 months later. I gain a whole new perspective on some of the things I've done and it gives me inspiration on new tricks. Wish more people had this mindset because there's so much ski content on instagram that never sees the light of day on NS.

Insta is easier and a much bigger platform. There was also a multiple page thread a couple months ago shaming people that were planning on going to T line this summer, just saying.
