If a company were to make a system that let you replace the edges on your skis when they crack or are just to worn out to keep using them would a system like that work I was talking to my friend and it just popped into my head
I feel like eventually something to fix the whole broken edges situation will be invented and its gonna end up sounding so obvious and simple. Like rocker makes sense but it took so long to become a thing.

The way I envision it possibly working is less a part of the ski and more a third party product. Think of it like skateboard rails, if your edge pulls out you clean up the break, and put in a specially designed replacement segment with holes for screws in it. Wouldn't necessarily be a permanent fix and would pull out eventually but would definitely extend the life of the ski.
The biggest issue i've had replacing edges is getting screws to both hold the edge in between the teeth and not stick out of the base, having edges designed to be screwed in would be a game changer.
The whole point of the glue they use to bind the edges in the ski is that it will never rip out, and if it does rip out it would cause damage to the ski bc the glue is so strong. Then b4 ur inserted a new edge you would have to smooth out the inside of the gap where the new edge would go. That would be a huge bitch if its even possible. Then u would have to use a serious glue that is waterproof and water tight to glue the new edge in and you would have to clamp down or press the whole ski again to sandwich the new edge into the ski.
i bet if you asked a ski shop to do all this they would charge you 300-400 dollars. So it would probably make more sense to just buy a new pair of skis and dont hit rails as often.
i think if you used a solid sheet of metal that traversed above and over the base (sintered base) So that the edge was just the exposed part of an entire metal sheet would be the ultimate answer for edge durability.

I mean like the ability to have a modular edge where you can replace it with it being inserted into the ski, like the edge has a male connector and the ski has a female connector and the edge just slots in and is locked down somehow

That sounds pretty intuitive. The connectors would have to be burly as fuck though and if a rail impact cant tear the edge out how the hell are you going to pull it out to replace it?
the glue used now in skis to hold the edge in is incredibly strong. So a connector being that strong might be difficult to engineer.

I used to splice in new underfoot edges that I cannibalized from old skis. They actually worked surprisingly well and they’d last longer than the original edges but everything around them got fucked
What if the edges were built into the ski vertically instead of horizontally. Maybe this has already been done, but from my understanding, the edge is wrapped around the ski and the teeth of the edge face inward towards the center of the ski (flat). What if instead, they faced up towards the top sheet and were wrapped "vertically" that way. Sure, at the tips you'd have to make adjustments because the thickness of the ski tapers, but just a thought.
Edges are overrated, tbh I get kinda happy once mine fall out bc then it makes every rail slide like grease.

I bet it'd be a different edge material. I don't see why we still have metal edges when we have synthetic materials that can do the exact same thing for lighter and cheaper. Maybe even stronger, too.
