Hood Crew tag on Mount Hood

Just saw this on Facebook, looks like someone decided to tag a rock on Hood with "Hood Crew"...what is up with this @hoodcrew?

Post seems to suggest it was @ScrappyJoeYoung, sounds like there was pretty solid evidence of this posted on Instagram that has since been removed.

Curious what these folks have to say about it, seems wack and completely unnecessary, and clearly the hood community by and large is quite unhappy about it.

Always been a huge hood crew fan, but I gotta say this is not a good look

On one hand I understand where the fb op is coming from but on the other hand its just paint you pussy its not like theres litter or anything, just wash it off if its so offensive you lazy ass. If you care that much about the mountain that you wanna run the person outta town for it then surely you must care enough to bring up a bucket of water maybe paint thinner and take the 2 mins it takes to scrub the rock clean.

Whoever did it is kinda lame and they should stop but the mountain is literally called “hood” its not like they were drawing swastikas.

oooooh yeah that ain't it. Scrappy joe might be a good park skier, but he is a young greenhorn in the community still. There are people who have been calling hood home for decades and would never feel the need to put their mark on it physically. Some real entitlement right there. Sounds like Scrappy joe needs to realize that there is more to life than Mt Hood. Plus this is really sad if it's a recent tag. THC hasn't put any content out for years. Most of em went to Utah to actually ski

This is really sad and disturbing. One individuals actions do not represent the rest of the people associated or formerly associated with “the hood crew” . With that being said “the hood crew” died a long time ago, probably in 2015. It is disgusting to see mount hood defaced and the individual responsible should be ashamed and held accountable for his actions.

They tagged a lot more than 1 rock and 1 building. Also there is research from 2018 showing that salting glaciers causes no negative increase in sodium chloride levels in run-off creeks/rivers. So yeah, nobody cares about salting here cuz it's a problem you made up.

It's because it's ugly as fuck and visibly makes the place look more dumpy. No one can see the salt.

Also the paint serves absolutely no purpose, it only detracts. The salt use has benefits, regardless of whether it's shitty for the environment.

And more importantly, it's easy to get social media likes by posting a picture like that. Not easy to get likes by researching whether the salt use by Timberline is having any detrimental effects on the environment.

Well first of all, mt hood is not a glacier. Second, the amount of salt they use is terrible for the environment and I would love to see your source for your information.
My point is that there are worse things getting ignored/swept under the rug while the "community" is mad about something with only aesthetic impacts. I dont support the graffiti and its a shame, but its interesting how this "community" is so mad about this spray paint yet they don't give a fuck about the salt.

It's not really that interesting. Vandalism vs doing research on something T-Line has been doing for 50 years shouldn't be hard thing to grasp. They tagged all over Govy. These people aren't necessarily skiers or environmentalists. They're folks living in Govy getting their personal shit tagged. I'd love to see the look on the store owner's face when you tell him that he should be more worried about the salt's impact on the creeks.

That article sites a study done in 2010 about the Horstman Glacier. If you read that article at all, you'd see that the levels of chloride are larger in the rivers/creeks around mt hood and they didn't actually do a study on the palmer snow field. That article provides no conclusion other than ski resorts and environmentalists still need to work together on the issue. This article isn't a significant source, it is basically click bait.

I like to believe the hood crew lives on in the hearts and minds of boolers everywhere. It's the feeling you get when you wear a t shirt on your head, throw a shirtless upright 7, and swerve across a wet pile of gravel on the way to the palmer lift line...that, my friends, can never die

Now you're taking my comments and taking them to a completely different place. I said it was interesting people care this much about paint and don't care about the salt, because the salt benefits them, the paint is an eye sore and I would be upset if someone tagged my personal property too, but you're completely missing the point and responding in a personal, emotional way.

The only research linked in the article is to an honours thesis about Horstman Creek in BC. Not only does that thesis do a shitty job at reviewing literature on the effects of salt on the environment, the measurements at Hood are twice those measured in Horstman Creek (back in 2010, when salt use was almost certainly less than it is now).

I'd like to point out that this article (this is not research btw) states the concentrations are as high as 117 mg/L and also says research has shown detrimental effects on micro-organisms at soil levels as low as 90 mg/L.

Well yeah , it's not the most thorough research but I liked his methodology and the fact he WAS trying to get to the bottom of it from an honest place. It'd be nice to see it done with a full team that has funding one day!

In the links you posted, it said that the salmon river had higher than normal levels of chloride too, higher than what would naturally occur, I dunno what else has to be said, stop being so defensive of your home area.

Most of these things are just bi-products of operating a resort but seeing all these Facebook people talking about how the spray paint is going to leach into the soil and kill everything....have me laughing.

I’m not gonna pretend like I know who did or didn’t do it but Hood Crew is such a generic name and pretty well known. It’s totally plausible some random kid or fan boy did it. I wouldn’t be so quick to assume it was anyone from THC specifically.

There is a screenshot posted from someone’s instagram (not scrappy) in the Facebook. Even if Joey or this person had posted a photo of it, doesn’t prove they are the one(s) that did it necessarily. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was scrappy, in the last 3 weeks he got into a fight outside the Rat in Govy and got socked in the face by some dude and he’s also broken into Charlie’s and tagged some shit in there as well as on the outside of the building. People in Govy are definitely pissed at him
