OregonDeadmy season is done but I will still try to get up there and drink a beer with you. Think I am on track to be able to drive again in a week or two
Obama_careI live in seattle and ski summit glad to hear you like it I never really make it up to crystal but where are the best sections of the mountain you should defintly check out summit some time too
n3st34Just wanted to say thank you, park is better than it's ever been. Just wish there was a better dedicated lift for the medium line... Quicksilver used to be it, but even then, it's a slow lift. The largest jumps at crystal are really nice and floaty :)

Interesting article from the Seattle Times. General consensus is Crystal Mountain is holding it down
cyphersfor sure. especially now that there's a decent park (thanks @theabortionator) they kind of have everything going for them.
stevens on the other hand has gone to shit faster than any other mountain i can think of. place was hopping a few years ago. seemed like all of UW was in that upper lot on weekends, now i don't know anyone who skis there.
could write a whole thread on this but the vail formula of letting longtime employees walk is biting them in the ass. they do this at every single one of their resorts. the article touches on it but stevens is a pretty unique mountain that demands a lot of experience and familiarity. old lifts, complex avi risk, etc.
unfortunately a bunch of people (and hundreds of years of experience) bailed on that place because katz simply can't be bothered to pay them. now they're trying to fix 1960s riblets and do control work on the backside with a bunch of underpaid new guys. and eventually it's going to cost them.
end rant
theabortionatorIt's fucking stupid to let 10+ years of experience at the mountain walk for a few dollars an hour, sometimes a dollar if we're talking a slight raise to keep them happy. That person Might have done a couple of summer LM, has done early season snowmaking for 6 seasons, has 10 in a cat there, knows the terrain and the contours, which runs get the most sun. Knows which lifts will be an issue and what can be done to keep them running safely.
cyphersYeah this exactly. I did a summer of lift maintenance at Vail a while ago and saw several electricians with 20+ years of experience split because they hadn't seen a raise in forever. I distinctly remember not being able to do tower maintenance on chair 5 for WEEKS because the spacing system broke. Vail ended up paying out the ass in overtime labor all because the guys who could have fixed it in a day committed the cardinal sin of asking Katz for some spare change.
Giving raises is always going to be cheaper than spending years training up new mechs who can't work as quickly. Simple math. Also consider the effect on employee morale and retention when management openly gives veteran employees the finger in front of trainees (read: me) who are deciding whether or not it's a viable career (it's not). I'll never work maintenance at VR again and I'm not at all surprised to see that lifts are now constantly shitting the bed at Stevens.
CaseyCan’t tell if serious...
