This is the answer, right here. NS hasn’t changed as much as the whole culture and consumption style has changed. NS is just reflecting that.
5-6 years ago this topic came up a lot with all the old heads (me) up in arms about video (clips) killing the radio (edit) star.
It’s now to the point where there’s not much push back because I think we are all resigned to the new reality of ski content.
As said, if not for a project with Candide, TWall, etc. names attached, most people just aren’t interested in 2 minute plus content.
It’s a shame in a way, but it also has its advantages—mainly that there’s no gate keeping, and no bullshit, “exposure” and notoriety is a lot more egalitarian, and the skiers themselves are free to present their skiing in exactly the way that they choose. Edit: The other reality though is that their appears to be less reward nowadays. I just don’t know if skiing has enough cultural clout/cache for a bunch of people to get paid on the strength of 1mil follower ski accounts.
Over the years I can think of some parts in major movies that felt really subpar and out of place but with sponsorship money and stuff in the equation it was a reality of the game.
That all said, I love full movies, 15-20 minute “mini movies” and classic 3ish minute edits and miss them.
It is pretty damn cool though to pull out your phone and have an endless stream of crazy ski content at your fingertips at all times, and I am a lot more aware of lesser known skiers than I ever was. I just can’t remember or pronounce any of their names because they’re all Scandinavian, lol.
2020: Where you don’t know your favorite skier’s name, but know their IG handle, underscores and all.
tdolloInstagram has changed the way content is consumed. You can literally post a clip of the trick you landed 30 seconds ago and share it with the world on IG. I think people have such short attention spans nowadays that they rather see a short clip than watch a full length edit (3-5 minutes). It's a shame really that edits don't get the views they should, look at those film companies that don't make feature length films anymore because you can get more interactions by posting individual clips throughout the season than you get by sitting on clips all season and dropping them all in one vid. Personally not a fan of the whole IG edit vibe but it is what it is I guess. Just my 2cents
