Fibulas pop out of place pls send help

My fibulas partially dislocate or (what feels like) totally pop out when I’m skiing and biking. I just kind of push on it until it gets back into place but I often can’t do it on my own and it feels badddddd. I have worn soft knee braces and tried taping but they still pop out.

Has this happened to anyone before and do you have any tips for prevention and recovery? I know I should go to physio but it’s really expensive where I am so I’m trying to get it sorted on my own. I figured the NS gang has had their fair share of knee issues so could give some insight. Cheers :-)

I have no insurance right now so it’s expensive for a broke ho
I’ll be back in Canada in like 3 or 4 months so I’ll go when it’s free, was just looking for ways to keep it going until then

Is it painful when it happens? How often/ how easily does it occur? What motion or action makes it happen? How long has it been going on?

Its a pretty rare injury and I’m looking some stuff up about it. Any more info would be good!

go get checked to see if you broke yourself. sometimes skiers are too tough for their own good. when I described my leg last spring the nurse on the phone said it was probably just a sprain but when they did the x ray it turned out my fibula was snapped and I had surgery

Don't you think linking people to texts they likely can't fully comprehend is a bit silly? Unless OP is also a PT I don't see how it helps. How can anyone accept conclusions they read in a scientific paper without fully understanding the methods and background of the subject? Especially these which are case studies of few if not just one person and they use a lot of arbitrary scales. Granted, they're lacking things to measure compared to other disciplines.

Reading the abstracts and conclusion isn’t that difficult. Those papers outline some decent strengthening guidelines. Exercises, if not understood, can be looked up on YouTube.

This is the point, is it safe to take abstracts and conclusions at face value while skipping the methods? I'm not intending to knock you personally, I just think it's a bad practice to toss around NCBI links (it's worse when people do it to paywalled journals, though these are not) and give the idea that an entire papers worth is in the conclusions. Science isn't about knowing things, it's about figuring things out. The methods are the most important part.

The links literally listed some exercise ideas for similar issues to OP, the methods, as you say. It’s one patient. Obviously I wouldn’t post private journals. Honestly it’s been a few days since I read them but I’m not giving medical advice. Giving OP a starting place.

First of all, thank you soooo much for taking the time to help me out! I greatly appreciate it.

It is painful when it happens, but not unmanageably so. Before it pops out, my knee joint starts to feel “sticky” and after it pops out I can’t straighten my knee and my lateral ROM is significantly less. Pushing it back in takes a decent amount of force though and it’s quite painful. Medial rotation in my ankles and knees and, to a lesser extent, dorsal flexion in my ankles, seems to be the trigger. It happens in my right knee 1-3x per week and it’s happened before in my left knee, but only a handful of times over the last year and it’s not nearly as uncomfortable. I would say that out of every 5 outings on a mountain bike/skis/etc, it will happen once or twice. It started in February: I was skiing and the outside edge of my right ski caught on a concealed stump, and even though my binding released, my fibula popped out. I went to ski patrol and they pushed it back in and the pain mostly subsided so I continued skiing. I’m probably dumb but it was a big juicy pow day.
I did look up some exercises to do afterwards and I’ve (pretty religiously) done 20-30mins of hip abductions/adductions, single leg raises, banded squats and ankle plantar flexions with a band about 4x per week. Sometimes it feels great, so I do it for longer, other times it’s painful so I do it for less.

I was thinking about this but since it’s happened a few times on the other fib as well, I feel it’s more likely that it’s just my shitty knees being shitty

I’m nervous but if I come out the other side bald + with a beard + that look in the eyes that says “I’ll eat your firstborn child” then it’s worth it

I’m just finishing up an HBSc so I’m fairly comfortable with these types of articles :)
But even if I had no background in biology, I think these studies would have still been easy enough to follow, if one is tenacious enough to google the terms and reread a few times. They were even more valuable given my background though, and I appreciate the links since credible information on any type of fibula injury (save for a full fibula break) is difficult to come by. Additionally, like the articles said, it’s a pretty rare injury that shows up in a multitude of ways, and rehabilitation is very subjective, so it would be difficult to have a larger sample size.
