I don’t know Vail Resort’s pay scale so it’s not really fair to go after them for that but if they need to raise wages to attract domestic employees then you can almost guarantee ticket prices, food and lodging will all be impacted.

The H-1B visa is used by seasonal migrant workers. If you have ever been to a ski resort you have undoubtedly encountered several employees utilizing this visa.

How does NS feel about this going into action?

A few years ago I emailed many, many US ski resorts asking if they will help with a H2b visa (an unskilled visa, the h1-b visa is for graduates / skilled jobs) so I can work temporarily in the US. Less than a handful even bothered to reply and they all said no. So I don't know which employees you're referring to.

It's extremely hard to obtain a work permit for the US, when I skied at Timberline last year I'm pretty sure all of the staff I encountered were American.

The real problem is not that many people are willing to take a low paying seasonal job that is high up in the mountains away from where they live. If you don’t have 4wd you are going to miss shifts, it costs money to buy fuel that cuts into your daily wage pretty hard. if the pass is closed you can’t work, the employee housing is most likely some combination of a hostel and unruly frat house.

They aren’t just going magically convert all these positions into full time benefited salary jobs because immigrants are banned. Although, I don’t think it’s that unfair that work visas are first on the chopping block in times of unprecedented unemployment, Trump just finds a way to always turn normal decision making into something that looks intentionally racist, so who knows.

I'm happy to be serious. I think this decision will have very real affects on many industries. If you just look at the ski industry it will be interesting to see how many of the MTN roles are filled and what it means for wages.

Even as it relates to covid, this could be good policy if we aren't able to do mass testing.

I think a lot of the unskilled people who come to the US to work do it through employment agencies that deal with the ski resorts. The resorts might not go through anyone else.

I'm honestly not sure. I mean the federal minimum wage has been stuck at 7.25 for so long. I'm not sure if low wages are meant to just take advantage of cheap outsourced labor, or if Americans would also work for those same wages.

Ideally, yes, wages should be increased to make jobs more attractive I guess? But I would have to think some policy would need to be behind it for us to actually see that.

Im sorry your experience was difficult. When I referred to H-1B I was including H-2B as well as that was included in the article. But thank you for making that more clear.

In regards to your comment about resorts not working with you, I was leaning on information from this Denver Post article.

I also agree with the other response to your comment. Where it said that bigger ski resort companies will use hiring agencies to fill their seasonal positions.

it sounds like going it on your own isn’t the best way to do it.

Yeah I work at PC for a non vail owned store and we have vail employees come through often, one girl who’s in often was surprised to hear our wages compared to hers (not much better but better). There’s so many j-1s in PC in the winter and I can see this effecting at least the first part of winter if they cant return until 2021, and of course in white ass Vail fashion they have those people doing strictly cleaning, food work or if they maybe have the skills they become instructors. Vail will likely have to match my works wages for lower end employees if they don’t already, the locals already hate them so they’ll need to really entice people to work for em cause them and resorts all over rely on those workers for cheap ass labor. Indeed says 49% of employees think they’re not paid fairly if that says anything, this looks like another one of trumps low key things he pulled while the country was going nuts over something else.

Taco bell pays better than northstar pays cats ops with years of experience. Yeah i can't figure out why anyone would leave either.

Nobody is irreplaceable, but letting people with 10+ years walk out the door over the tinyest pay raise to higher a fucking totally green person for a dollar or two less an hour.

Also in addition to experience being at a resort and knowing the ins an outs, the trails, the snowmaking system, the other employees, the features and the general park layouts.

But yeah seems reasonable to lose that for a buck or two an hour. And not even people being greedy. Even entry running one of those machines should start much higher.

Idk i posted on my engagement that if I left northstar id never work for vail again. Slimmest chance if I so early season snowmaking next year for the pass to work with my friends and ride with them the rest of the season.

Idk it's shitty. There are people with mad sills that are humblea as fuck while the industry bones them.

Then it's constantly new people, learning to run cats or other stuff learning the mountain, then they leave rinse repeat.

I just qanna move to some small hill in the midwest, by a house and all these bullshit resorts and the vacation towns around them can go fuck themselves.

I wanted to comment on Vail's treatment of employees just a little bit. I've never technically been an employee of Vail Resorts (very close but not directly) but I have seen their employee housing in Vail. It used to be quite grimey.
I can't speak to how the employees living there felt at the time, but since I lived there, the old employee housing has been tore down and replaced with new. At the very least you have to give Vail Resorts credit for not letting their employee housing turn to squalor.

I also understand that what they're doing is gentrification of mountain towns.

Aspen snowmass has super nice employee housing and treats their employees at least human. For the mega corps they do a pretty good job. Sure it's still corporate as fuck but they at least care or pretend to about the people.

Idk I've defended Vail against a lot of dumb people over the years, and still so. Im not one of those fuck the corporations guys. But I do have some decent gripes with the company. Idk same old same old i guess

No they are bracing for a rough winter and just praying they don’t have to close the lodge. Gaper families aren’t flying out from Jersey. They will already be cutting me a bigger deal on lodging than they’d like to ride lifts and all that they just are hoping they can sell me 10 overpriced beers.

Hopefully we get good snow in the fly to destinations and those locals get tons of untracked. I think Tahoe/Utah/Washington and CO resorts near Denver will be slammed with locals it’s still outdoor recreation after all.
