Other Sports Communities Similar to Skiing

I used to be pretty in to Mtn Biking, but then 3 years ago my life got busy. However, the last few months, I got back in to the sport. I truly forgot how much I enjoy it.

I found myself astounded at how similar the people of the Mtn Bike community are to the skiing community.

Just at my local bike park, you have the following personalities:


Flex Zone Only - $6k total in gear, can hardly hit a table top without eating dirt




Excuse Makers – “nah dude if I was at my home park, I would’ve hit transition perfectly, this dirt is just weird. My shocks need to be serviced. I got dirt in my eye. I hit my brakes too hard”




Same Gear for Years – These guys are the quiet ones, at least here at my park. Don’t talk much, but send every single big azz gap jump without hesitation, and never crash. Been on the same downhill bike for 3+ years




Wonder Kids – little groms that are like 11, absolutely ripping, and make me look like a sloth on a bike.



Any other parallels I am missing? Am I totally off?

Way more niche than skiing and mountain biking but used to competitively waterski and its kinda the same thing on a smaller scale. U get ppl with $1,000+ skis who can't even make a one hand turn and then old dudes on wooden skis who fucking rip competition courses

Thankfully, I have not met or heard any backpack jammers yet. People on bike trails are also more courteous than on the slopes

After having to move to Florida in an unfortunate family situation, I found a very similar community in wakeboarding. I love cable park wakeboarding to death and I think a big part of that is how similar I’ve found the community to skiing. It’s a sport that’s very much on the come up and it’s so much fun it’s ridiculous. Here’s a dank edit for reference:

Honestly, surfing is kind of a cliquey sport because it's so common these days for lineups to be packed so everyone ends up hating each other, and people seem to look down on people who are worse than them which reminds me of skiing a little. Most of the time it's pretty chill but i have heard some arguments go down and it's definitely more intense on the west coast.

In skiing/mtb people are waay more friendly to each other than in surfing, a crowded day in a "locals only" kind of break is as toxic as it gets

Surfing is really chill, but I feel like you are really just chill with your "group" and then other groups hate you and you hate them. Ben Gravy came up to surf superior and some of our guys ended up surfing with him. All of the other groups were so upset that superior was gonna get blown up. I've been up here for 3 years. Aggressive inline community was probably like the freeski community 15 years ago, a bunch of reckless adolescents and young adults just hucking themselves at shit. Now they are just a bunch of dads who shred the park harder than most of the skateboarders lmao.

The really old, true locals, tend to be pretty cool. Most of the issues stem from the 28-40 year crowd.

Mtn biking is pretty similar to skiing in that most of the people buying all the swanky equipment can’t ride for shit. I was sending road gaps on my piece of garbage $600 hardtail while some people can’t even bunny hop their $3000 enduro bike over a log.

Coming from a snowboarding background, snowboarding is way chiller and bro'd out than skiing. I'm a skier because the actual practice brings me more pure bliss, but skiing fucking sucks from the standpoint of just being cool to each other. There is a massive forced hierarchy in skiing that you don't have in snowboarding. There are a lot more jerry's in snowboarding, but they don't catch half the shit jerry skiers do. Sidenote: snowboarding gear is wicked low tier.

This is mostly true. Now, I should also give credit to the few guys that I have seen with brand new, get sendy gear... Here at Duthie Hill (25 minutes east of Seattle), there are some guys that absolutely rip, and they are rocking 2020 gear for sure. Maybe they are on deals with bike shops, idk. Regardless, some of the 'ride as legit as the gear looks' dudes exist haha

I’ve noticed the freshwater surf community is the embodiment of everything I could want in another sport, I’ll go up to river surf in Missoula and about half the time im in a guys car who I kind of know driving to some new rapid someone found just because everyone stoked about it, plus it’s a standing wave so you don’t miss out on anything.

The closest park to me is mammoth. Backpack jammers are everywhere with their rental treks and rented giro helmets, so annoying.

I've worked around the whitewater industry for 3 years now. Definitely tue most welcoming and helpful group of outdoors enthusiasts I've come acrossed. Always willing to help out whether its a private boater or a commercial raft. Competing companies even bail each out on the river. May be the dirt baggiest group, but for sure the nicest.

That's really funny cause they used to also be called Joey's in skiing. I figured they changed it to jerry since joey otd was already taken on insta. These days if you call someone a joey people ask you if you mean jerry lol

I was thinking surfing for a second too and then I thought nah, skiers are much nicer than surfers. In the line up everyone basically is out to cut each other's lunch. Not much talking, minimal hoots, little sharing of the vibe. The person next to you - who you might have travelled to the beach with in the same car - is in direct competition with you for the same wave.
Surfers are way more critical about others surfers too. Style is everything and transgressors are beneath contempt. To see how horrible surfers are about other people who dare to share their love of riding waves check out the comments on stabmag.com or beachgrit. And that's even before you get started on bogeyboarders (dick-draggers, shark biscuits, speedbumps, gays on trays) and standups (sweepers, goatboats, fuck off cunts). Newschoolers is a total love fest in comparison.
Going skiing is just about guaranteed fun, but when you go surfing you never know if you're going to enjoy it. Too many variables - spot selection, swell, wind, tide, banks, crowd, bitey sea life, temperature, board type, wetsuit comfort, the list goes on. It's a cruel mistress. I live at a very consistent west coast beach in NZ and work from home so I can surf pretty much whenever I want, but I feel like giving up for ever and ever at least once a week. Surfing also takes a long time to get good enough to have fun on those rare good days. One positive thing is that surfing's not such a gear head sport as skiing, so it's a lot cheaper.

This actually just occurred to me: downhill longboarding. It's a bunch of somewhat rowdy adolescent and young adult males who love getting sendy with the crew on some big ass hills/mountains. Yeah I know that technically it can be like ski racing, but the people who race on longboards do it because they love the thrill of speed and competition instead of because it's like some established sport their rich dad wants them to do or whatever. And it's not structured like that at all either, everyone just kinda teaches themselves to go faster and do slides and stuff. Overall a decently chill and nice community too as far as my experience went.

the price of one half day lift ticket can get you easily 3 pairs of used skates && you could basically skate a lifetime with those 3 pairs of skates

I think you make some good points here man. However I disagree about your toxicity point. I don’t think skiing is the most toxic. Some of the best days I’ve had in the park are when I show up solo and some other skiers invite me to ride for the day. Usually tons of fun and full of great progression

This is even more niche than skiing but bodysurfing is mad chill. Surfers will look down on it but it’s a completely different vibe in the water- I competed in a couple of comps and the lineup was nothing but pure stoke & positive vibes. I think it has to do with the fact that it’s the most purest wave sport compared to surfing & bodyboarding. I prefer it to surfing any day tbh dropping in on gnarly shore break is just as fun imo

What the fuck are you smoking?
Blading is a chill community but I would not consider it particularly amazing for freeskiers esp because most of the aggressive skaters are 25-40 years old or even older in some cases.
I like blading for what the sport is, not the community. It's not fun to be the only one on blades at the skatepark 90% of the times you go there.

Even though blading and skiing have had like the exact same trajectory in terms of style, I don't think they actually influence each other.
New school blading makes new school skiing look godlike lmfao, seriously blading has devolved so much from the 2000s when they were basically doing urban skiing without snow

The point about price is correct tho, people always say blading is more expensive than skateboarding but even then blading is far less expensive than mtb, bmx, skiing, snowboarding, wakeboarding, waterskiing, etc

I certainly don't look down on body surfers. You guys are core! A while back someone gave me a hand plane he'd made out of pawlonia and cedar. He wanted feedback, but it's so beautiful I've never been able to bring myself get it wet. So we've hung on the wall as art instead. He's cool with that too.

I'm not even sure what your overall argument is. I agree with some stuff that you said in this post but in the previous thing you said it sounded completely different, you said that "blading has the best action sport community in the world" which I disagree with and now you're talking about how much more capable blading pros are than skiing pros. Trick progression is not community lmao.
But even though blading and skiing are similar I'm not sure they influenced each other. Somehow they both started in the late 1990s, had the same gangster hip hop and baggy clothes aesthetic, and hit similar features and did similar tricks in the streets and park, and yet skiers chose to skateboard and bladers chose to snowboard.
Freeskiing is NOT toxic, just because Newschoolers is somewhat of a shitshow (I mean, it's a fucking Internet forum filled with adolescent boys and young men) does not mean that your average park rat skiers aren't chill guys...

WestieBoganI certainly don't look down on body surfers. You guys are core! A while back someone gave me a hand plane he'd made out of pawlonia and cedar. He wanted feedback, but it's so beautiful I've never been able to bring myself get it wet. So we've hung on the wall as art instead. He's cool with that too.

Here it is on the wall complete with a Cook Islands shell necklace as a wake. I'd need to give it some sort of leash or hand strap if I wanted to use it. Otherwise I'd lose it. But I hear you - I should give it a whirl at some stage.
