I bought my taco for $2500 and my used mtn bike for $3800. Since then I've replaced the brakes = $300, rims = $400, bottom bracket = $200, crankset = warranty, plus at least another $500 annually on regular maintenance and other random shit that breaks... Biking is fucking retarded.

Previous company I worked for was fortunate enough to get 55% off current/next season's santa cruz so I decided to buy one after I tore my ACL. I have a nice bike, I've gotten a lot better, have a lot of fun but I'm still not very good though hah

Would dabble if I took a year round job doing terrain parks and bike trails though. Get something cheap ish and stick to easier trails. I used to build bmx dirt trails so always been passionate about dirt. I just doubt I could friggin ride for shit these days.

If you're not sending hard you'd be fine on a decent used hardtail which you could probably find for like $500. Mtn. biking is a ton of fun. That said, I feel the same way about falling skateboarding as you do about falling mtn biking.

14 years ago I bought a hardtail dirt jump bike for $1000. I chose the bike with the burliest frame I could find, because I had broken the frame on my two previous bikes. Back then I was really passionate about mountain biking, way more than skiing. I was riding every day for hours. When parts in the drivetrain on my new bike started to break, I converted it to a single speed, because 80% of my riding was dirt jumping and "urban assault". I stopped riding for a few years because I was travelling or working all the time and just generally busy with other things. For a while I just used the bike for riding around town.
I've been getting back into it since a bunch of my friends have taken it up, and now there are good trails around me for the first time in my life. I'm using the same old rig. My skills have completely atrophied but I'm having fun with it and I'm definitely more fit. It feels terrifying when my wheels leave the ground now, but I'm a bit faster and definitely more confident with each ride.
