Dadcam thoughts

What does everyone think about the popularity of using dadcams (like sony handycams) that went out of style years ago but are coming back now for edits and movies? Personally, I enjoy when they are used every once in a while in a movie/edit for aesthetic reasons to add a little bit of a retro feel to it, but I'm not a huge fan when the entire edit or movie is made using them. I just personally prefer a cleaner look. Also, though, I see the appeal of using them for a whole movie; they are very portable, easy for anyone to use, and you can find them for insanely cheap online.

Fucking love them. They bring a great vibe to the vid. I have no problem watching a whole movie of dad cam clips.

Absolute heat. I’m tryna get some clips with Frank this winter and maybe some frank commentary thereafter. Also thinking of making a petition to make x games commentators the dads of each guy during their runs. That would be some fire

idk much about cameras but this my opinion on the sony handycam that I own:
-super easy to use, easy to pass around
-cheap
-great zoom
-decent quality for the price (like 1080p) and captures audio really well

I can see why these kinds of cameras are popular these days. That being said, I def prefer my GL2 to digital handycams.

VX works great for skateboarding because it's much lower speed and everything is very close to the ground. Skiing and snowboarding are significantly faster sports with bigger air and larger features that cover more area, so staying close enough to film as you would skating is really difficult. Of course if you are skiing at a jogging or running pace on the smallest features a VX might make sense.

vx and hvx is especially dope when the filming is high quality. the SD/lofi HD look of those cameras kind of give the illusion that the filming is amateur level which can help emphasize the skiing - even/especially when the filming is actually tight and thoughtful. guys like oli, sanch, and owen especially are keenly aware of the detail in movement and perspective. the dadcam look is like a visual trick, it makes you think that it's low quality, low budget... when it's done right it disguises the filming and storytelling. you could be watching a dadcam video and never realize how perfectly orchestrated the filming is. and that's an awesome artistic skill to have, to make something super nuanced but yet it still appears like anyone could pick up the camera and do exactly the same just because of the aesthetic.
