Kai Mahler started out as a big air specialist of mind-boggling talent. His X Games performances were questionably scored for years, with Kai throwing some of the most progressive and impressive tricks ever done, but somehow never finding himself at the top of the podium. As time has moved on, he has taken his talent in a more creative direction, combining his near unrivaled air awareness with new grab combos, butter landings and more. Now one of the most exciting skiers to watch lap the park, Kai is still pushing the bar of what is possible higher each season, while keeping himself to himself all the while. Not one for self-promotion, here's a rare chance to ask Kai what makes him tick in this AMA.

Fuck yea, so hyped for this one. You've been one of my favs for a longgg time and IMO you're one of the skiers that best/most successfully brought real style to competitions, especially big air. Few questions..


1) What inspired the Gucci du-rag in 2017 XGames big air and did anyone give you shit about it?

2) You were famous for constantly rocking that Red/Grey Oakley jacket. What about it did you love specifically? (fit, color, warmth, etc,)

Why don't you film more such as edits, short projects etc; Do you ever plan on filming or getting into skiing street? Where do you see yourself in skiing in a few years?

Are naturally very air aware or did it come over time? Of course air awareness improves over time but did you have a natural talent with it from the start?

First off all sorry for my grammar, it has been a while since i saw a schoolbook.
Man thanks for asking i feel great. I really missed skiing with friends wich i rarely saw during the season.
idk, feels just natural, ive been trying to make simple tricks look different by moving my body differently. make sense huh?

thanks for the words man.
-So its actually just a random gucci bandana (not a durag) wich was a present from Dave Ortlieb (Sämi Ortliebs Brother) to my 18th. idk i just did it for the swag^^
-Thats a long story, but to make it short. I had the opportunity to design a jacket for oakley back in 12/13 and the red/grey was a different color option (wich only made it to the samples i believe). Because it was almost one of a kind i liked it a lot.

Well when i first heard of freeski it was 2005 and shit was way different back then. It changed a lot over the past years, i don't think it is going in the wrong direction. It is just not for me anymore. Main reason probably was that comp skiing didnt give me the joy and fun wich i had years ago.

one of my favs all around. want to know more about your skiing, sorta a blend of new wave improvisation and full competitive aggression & technicality. maybe you could talk a bit about your inspirations on both ends of the spectrum, who has inspired your skiing this way? and what other inspirations do you have from outside of skiing that have affected your style?

where the homies are, i pretty much loved every place and resort ive been to. except a few wich i dont wanna hate on :)

last season after i stopped competing, i just wanted to ski and enjoy it to the fullest. There are for sure edits planned for next season. im stacking up on cams & cam gear atm.
Im not the best railskier thats why i never saw myself in the streets tbh. im more of a bench jibber when it comes to streets :)
I hope i'll be still skiing as much as i can. but i'm also starting coaching the younger generation in switzerland wich im really looking forward to.

im not the most creative guy outside of skiing. also i wouldnt describe myself as a creative skier, for me its just my flow and vision wich defines my style. i really like to skate, play video games and cooking up edits but i think thats kinda it. i tried producing some beats but that didnt went on long.

i like handycam footage a lot. my goal is to make kinda trashy edits/mixtapes like most skate or snowboard movies are. thats all for now :)
