Here's a question I want to pose- In the past, some of the largest changes in society and policy in the U.S. have been a result of violence. If the past 10 years have shown anything its that protests and voting do not create the wanted results. Regarding current events, I think the country as a whole is pretty far from it yet, although there is certainly room for improvement. Its clear that there are still some folks would like take upward mobility away from poc. Really sad that some of these people wear a uniform. Andrew Yang said something in a debate awhile ago about how cannot legislate racism away as it is an issue of individuals hearts and minds which I totally agree with. No matter what laws are passed there will still be racists. Thats why I keep advocating for peaceful protests and dialogue on race as it deals with the heart issue.

Peaceful protesters being assulted is very messed up. I would suport anyone defending themselves against an officer doing such things. But lighting things on fire, smashing windows, spraying graffiti, looting businesses is not a form of self-defence.

I think yku have misinterpreted the point. Lonely asked when violence against the government is necessary. I answered with when upward mobility is suppressed by thd government. If you read further in the thread I explained how think the government is mostly protecting and enabling this mobilty. A good education system is part of that. Would love to see continued growth in AP and dual enrollment opportunities as well as skilled trades education to help create more opportunities for students.

Alright, I want to clear some stuff up here and put some personal stuff out there.

First of all, I think all people can change, but while most issues are grey I feel that how certain members of the police have acted in the past 5 days has been nothing short of despicable. This comes from someone who is usually on the side of cops and grew up with family members in the force and working with the force throughout highschool and into college. I think if you can't admit that then there is something wrong with your train of thought. There is a substantial amount of the police force that should not be cops.

Secondly, I grew up poor, like seriously poor until I was maybe into my sophomore year of high school. Me saying that is not meant to be a pity trip. I was fortunate to have a parent that worked their way up from nothing to become successful and that was instilled in me. That being said, playing the system does not always work in your favor. I graduated top in class, went to a top university and I will still have huge amounts of debt into the foreseeable future. That is with both parents in the picture, still working and not incriminated over a g of weed. Based on what you are saying I did everything right, but I am still hosed. The worst thing is is that I am white, middle class, and came from an above-average school district. There are millions who had it way worse than me who, based on your ideas of inherited traits, could have been much more successful. Why would you rather leave them behind than raise them up? I can't even imagine what it would be like to be in a school with no funding, no opportunity to dual enroll, or no have access to the things that I had access to in my developmental years.

To say that there is no barrier for poor kids to be successful because of jeff Bezos is like saying having your parachute fail isn't deadly because one guy survived by falling into a hay bale. It's not countless, it's very quantifiable. Name me 10 billionaires from the U.S. who grow up poor in an inner-city and were still successful. I don't understand why in the U.S. we are so against improving the lives of our fellow countrymen just because they might do better than us. Not all k-12 educations are equal. Not all people grow up in equal households. Not all people have to grow up worried about being shot because of the color of their skin and the place that they are growing up in. Why can't we improve that?

Our goal should be to make ourselves and our fellow citizens as successful as possible regardless of circumstance. Yet people like you want to push our fellow citizens down since it "might possibly make it equal or it the very most easier to be successful than what I experienced"

So I slow down and then stop because we are supposed to be exempt from the curfew (just show badge and cool) but the cop car doesn't look like he's in a position for me to show my badge. He's parked directly facing the ramp. I call police dispatch and conveniently they have no fucking clue. Now I got some cunt behind me laying on her horn and trying to get around me nearly scraping my car. Ended up having a tense conversation with this bitch who said she lives nearby, probably in some overpriced renovated crack house. She takes the lead and starts to move forward.

The cop then turns on his sirens and horn and pulls up his loud speaker and tells us to leave immediately. Fuck me, the hospital is literally 500yds from the exit and I can't get off. So now her, I, and about 10 other cars have to merge from stopped and onto a busy freeway right at a choke point.

I was so fucking pissed. Had to jump on another highway and take neighborhood streets to double back to work; not the safest neighborhood either. Rolled in 30min late.

You might be asking why I even tried to get off somewhere that looked closed. Well my coworker the other day tried getting home and kept hitting roadblock after roadblock and going in circles. They keep randomly changing the road blocks and don't have this info posted anywhere. Not the police website. Not ODOT. Nowhere! Absolutely bullshit. The way the curfew is worded, we should be able to get through. Man I was heated.

The two videos I’ve seen of innocent people being shot with non-lethal rounds is during city curfew. They were told to go inside several times by officers while they just stood there dumbfounded. Absolutely perplexed that so many cops nationwide are committing these egregious acts on camera during protests specifically against that sort of stuff. While they seem to be targeting all protesters without mercy, it's evident by some of the videos online that blacks are still being singled out. This is totally unreal and clearly none of the cops are reading social media when they get home or watching the news; if they are, then they're even dumber than I thought. This is crazy. Maddening. I literally have no words.

We continually hear about random police brutality and profiling but brush it aside since it doesn't affect us and not something we experience. This however is on stage for everyone to see and no one can ignore the flood of videos that are being published. So fucked up.

CLQGeorge Floyd wasn't paid to be on the frontlines, Eric Garner wasn't paid to be on the frontlines. The only crime they committed was being black in America.

Well, that, along with drug possession, grand larceny, false impersonation, driving without a license, selling untaxed cigarettes, resisting arrest, forgery, assault. All accounting for over 30 arrests.

Should they still be alive? Absolutely. Was what the particular officer did that resulted in the death of each justified. Nope.

Is their only 'crime' being black? Definitely not.

JAHpowYeah, the legolas thing was dumb. A few years ago I thought maybe there was going to be a miniseries made of The Silmarillion. That would've been awesome, but I think it's too epic in scope to make possible. Who knows if there would even be much interest in it. I love The Silmarillion, but I know several others who thought it was boring.

I was too young when I read the Silmarillion and didn’t really understand much of what Tolkien was doing. Definitely need to reread. I think a series would be fantastic, plenty going on in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd age to keep audiences interested.

My hope would be for it to turn into a game of thrones scale and quality production (just without a wildly anticlimactic ending). It could very well be the most epic story told of that universe. Considering that the wars and turmoil were so great that the gods literally broke and sunk the land into the ocean.

The primary reason poor kids don't often get out of poverty is because they are stupid just like their parents. If you believe in evolution, this shouldn't even be controversial. Even if society were perfectly fair, poor kids would still be less likely to succeed because they are more likely to inherit bad genes from their parents.

Do you really think it's pure coincidence that black people make up 75% of the NBA despite being 13% of the population? The odds of that happening by random chance are well over one in a billion. The reason black people dominate the NBA is because they inherit athleticism from their parents.

George Floyd was accused of using a fake $20 bill, he did not resist arrest and was killed. Eric Garner was selling cigarettes for a $1, he was almost immediately put into a choke hold that killed him.
