Alta/LCC conditions?

Me and some buddies are heading down from big sky back to our home land to build some features.

how far is the hike to find decent snow to build a jump? Also I know avy conditions can be a little sketch so what’s our best bet to stay safe out there?

I went up to Alta a day ago and conditions weren't the greatest. Generally the snow on top was pretty sticky but, if you are just going to build a jump its easy to clear the top layer of snow on the in-run and landing.

There are a bunch of jumps already built right near the collins/wildcat base which would only be a few minutes to hike up to. A few jumps have been built about half way up the sunnyside lift but they are pretty small jumps.

I'm no expert on avalanches or the current snowpack situation in LCC but there is a decent amount of sub 30 degree slopes near sunnyside if you're lookin for small and safe features.

gonna be bootpacking for a little bit but theres plenty up high, just navigate it safely and have the right gear.

Alta still has good coverage, (as of last Saturday when I was there), you could find something up in the sunny side area, pretty mellow hike in. Or their is the booter at the bottom of wildcat you always see in slvsh@alta.

I'm curious to see how the snow holds up after these warm temps this weekend. We have been in the mid 90s in the valley.

Was up at Alta today, thinning by the day but up high on the north end was aight off baldy, skied little chute and cut some wet sluffs but didn’t run far but had to let em run before dropping, snow was still kinda fast til ballroom, Collins groomer to the base is choice chopped up corn. If you don’t have gear just find some sheltered trees at the resorts, lotta coverage still up higher. Just keep it inbounds, with snow guns around there’s probably a deeper snowpack too.

Snowpack is pretty much isothermic and as safe as it gets. Follow the sun and go ski corn

I remember any runs that Snowbird kept open late-may/early june were soupy as fuck, pretty pasty up top in the AM but once the sun works its magic, its proper corn skiing

I’m sure a year ago I was skiing the bird out in mineral, shit was so much fun, then head to little cloud 12-2pm. Fuck.

Skied suicide this morning which was awesome and just as nice to go fast as it would be to wiggle, nice and smooth, apron was ass. Then went to baldy seeing it was only quarter to ten, pretty ass on the shoulder, little wasn’t as skied up but that and main are filled with baby sharks. Managed the whole day in about 4 hours surprisingly with how bad skinning conditions are now, seems like early mornings or late afternoon tours are the go for the faster snow, haven’t really skied good open corn lately, just decent snow in chutes.

ill take corn skiing in the heat over anything right now. Missing out on 2 prime early summers of shred after great snowfall years cuz of either injury or this god damned pandemic lol

That seems about right for snow. I think the last 2 times I hit the shoulder late season the snow was pretty shot.

I'm bummed to got get an alta terr in this spring/summer. I think ill be in CA till early august. If any of my friends are baxk to work and there's still any snow to hike to ill take a gander but i doubt it.

Still plenty to be had and we’re very lucky to be able to access it still, nothing crazy left to ski really. Just nice to also get to the top somewhere right now, have a piff and beer or two, ski some shitty snow down. My friends just called me to come up to the sugarloaf pond skim, if only I was told before committing to a big morning tour, and now they say it’s their t minus on the season, still gotta do a summer solstice ski boys cmon.

Yeah it had a few ok sections but I also thought I had a more open exit but ended up sliding down and across through some trees, sending a bit of wet sluff but not as bad as it was sliding the wet pow last week. Unless little still goes which likely won’t after tomorrow probably, it’s just main chute for decent all day skiing. Still stuff to hunt for at Alta like random chutes, but otherwise some big open patches, little chutes cornice was also cracking 5’ back maybe the same in width. If anyone’s up there just keep your distance from being above the rock patches at the entrance cause she may break soon.
