To mask or not to mask?

That is the question. Lots of opinions out there; I clicked on an ad from my city recommending masks and the amount of rage between people was insane. The amount of misinformation was also unreal. Reminds me why I hate Facebook, except this was on the NextDoor app.

Anyway where do you fit in? I'm not talking about wearing a mask outdoors; I'm talking about in stores, transportation authorities, and other crowded places. Answer the poll below and throw in a comment. Let's keep this civilized (good luck NS).

I went out to eat the other weekend when some counties in Oregon opened and there wasn't one person in the whole restaurant wearing one except the staff, as the law requires them to. There has been no spike in cases, no spike in deaths. This whole thing is a giant nothing burger and I've been saying it since the beginning and will continue to do so.

Reading through some of these comments and I just think to myself, skiers bitching about wearing a mask.lol Our season was cut short for the most of us, just pretend its cold outside when you go to the store and imagine you are on the ski hill. Hell, throw your goggles on and have fun with it. I think we could all use a little fun in these times.

Masks have been shown to reduce spread by up to 75 percent. If you choose not to wear one because you find it uncomfortable, you're a selfish piece of shit who can't put other people before themselves. What harm is wearing a mask to you? It's prove to reduce spread, so what other reason do you have for not wearing it? Because some stupid piece of shit Republican who defies science? Nothing at all, I'm just arguing the scientific method is done through trial and error. It's all new and there are a ton of conflicting reports on whether or not they work. I'm all for pro choice of private businesses. If you force customers to wear them that's totally fine. I have a problem with cities and counties mandating them in public. It's feel good legislation, it's too early to say they help or not for entire cities to make them law for wearing them in public (which they are.) Plus one thing researchers know for sure is covid doesn't effectively transmit outdoors. Therefore making legislation that forces masks outside is retarded and based on nothing. Then again a baker in CO got sued for not making a gay cake and it went all the way to the supreme court. If a business can refuse you for not wearing a mask they can refuse to not bake your gay cake. If a business doesn't want to enforce mask laws they shouldn't have to either. It's all freedom of choice, and until the science is concrete on masks there should be no mandated city/state law saying you have to wear them. It should all be the private sectors/business choice.

This is one of those cases where a potential band-aid is causing us no harm. Why. not. wear. a. mask. What are the downsides - even if we learn a year from now it didn't help. Businesses operate with licenses from their respective states/counties. They will do whatever the hell the state wants them to do, for better or worse. Hate to break it to you, but this country isn't as free as you think.

Even basic cloth masks stop droplets. Droplets are primary cause of spread. This isn't hard. Also - "probably" stay home when coughing is just the confidence inspiring statement those who interact with seniors regularly want to hear.

Serious question. Can you explain not wearing a mask in a public setting (grocery store, pharmacy, airport, etc) that isn't selfish?


So you have access to tests to confirm daily that you aren't asymptomatic? And because it's annoying....



Some people are going overboard here in terms of using them when, say, hiking, biking, sitting alone on a beach. Viral load matters and I would be hard pressed to see a common situation here you would reach that without someone coughing in your face while hiking or biking (obviously much different situation where prolonged exposure in an enclosed space - even if spread out - can infect a ton of people - IE Skagit Valley Chorale-esc situation - which is why dine-in restaurants are pretty much fucked for the interim).

There is a level of logic here that is getting overlooked in favor of a blanket policy just to try and get people to wear them (because we're too dumb for that level of nuance).

But the fact that there is even a conversation now about whether or not there is value in wearing masks when you are in public and around other people shows how fucking dumb we've become as a country (to be fair, there were lots of dumb people in 1918 too - looking at you Anti-Mask League of San Francisco).

There is no scientific debate as to whether or not masks help prevent spread. None. Wear a mask when you are in public, or don't go in public. In the realm of topics that have become political - one where both sides often have some merit - this one is beyond dumb. Speechlessly dumb. As in I wonder how-you-tie-your-shoes-in-the-morning dumb.

Wear a mask.


If we're wearing masks on the basis that people who show no indication of being sick could actually be sick and then spread the sickness, then we will never stop wearing masks because there will always be the possibility that we could be asymptomatic carriers of some terrible disease.

At the end of the day it comes down to three things:
1. Statistically, there are very low odds that I'm currently asymptomatically infected.
2. If am asymptomatically infected, I am probably much less infectious than a symptomatic person.
3. Masks actually don't do much to reduce spread because the virus can pass through them.

Combine all three of these likely facts, and you'll see the marginal benefit of wearing a mask as an asymptomatic person is not great enough to justify the discomfort and bureaucracy. The chance that me wearing a mask will actually prevent somebody from getting infected is below 1%.

Are we really equating a private business declining service for a public health choice (not wearing a mask) with discriminating against individuals based upon a personal characteristic (sexual orientation, race, sex)?

I agree there is a level of nuance & complex legality in terms of forcing private businesses to serve customers they personally object to (their personal feelings of course being their right) - but feels like a false equivalency to equate a business saying "for public health reasons, we require masks when you enter our business" to "because you are gay you are not welcomed here". They are just not morally or legally equivalent.

One consequence of having mask legislation is that it is damn near unenforceable. It isn't right for policy to be made if it relies on 19 year old walmart cashiers to enforce them. Could you imagine working mandatory overtime at walmart with no pay incentive benefits, no chance of unemployment if you're at risk, AND having to do the state's job of telling hothead jimbo and sassy susie-jo is to put a mask on their face?

It is all just another case of the 'essential' pee-on minimum wage workers getting the absolute shaft during this whole ordeal.

This country isn't as free as I think it is because people such as yourself take the word of the federal government as verbatim and do whatever they tell you to do. I swear to god they'd release some report saying if everyone does the cha cha slide at 7am Covid-19 would be 50% less transmissible. You and a bunch of other people would be clapping and getting down to it at that time. Yes it's the internet I swear on it, get used to it. This whole thing has made me so much more libertarian. At this point in time with the government forcing people to close down their businesses because they aren't "safe" I'm all for the people doing what's in their best interests. If it's in their interests to wear masks because the government forces them to go for it. If you don't want to force people to wear masks in your business you shouldn't have to either.

I'm arguing for personal choice it's not that radical of an idea.

He won that Supreme Court case FYI as well. He deserves the right to refuse any patron in his business. The same way he deserves the right to not serve someone with a mask/ serve someone without a mask. He recently got sued again for not baking a transgender case. There are an estimated 500k-1M asymptomatic infected currently in the US. The country has a population of 330M. Any given asymptomatic person has a less than 1% chance of being infected and thus no more than a 1% chance of spreading the virus. The other two facts just further decrease the probabillity that they will spread the virus, although it's hard to estimate exactly by how much until somebody decides to do a rigorous study of them.

I see a difference but it doesn't matter because he can do whatever he wants. It's his own private business, would I have recommended he just baked the cake? Yes 100% the amount of time/ stress and money it took for him to win the case was likely absurd. But he had a personal belief and followed through with it in his own private ownership, therefore I have nothing to say on the matter. Nor can I influence his beliefs/ nor should the federal government.

I have M95 masksstockpiled as a side effect of working construction. PPE is just part of doing business when there is a hazard- I don’t really think twice about throwing on a mask when I go to a store or whatever, I’ve been on job sites where the air quality sucks so much ass that it’s respirators all day every day you just deal with it.

You can actually spray particles up to 27ft so this 6ft rule is kinda odd but that may be why they came up with 30ft.

Mask up whenever we spray the golf course at work, cuz those growth regulators are cancer-causing. That and theres a lot of dead animals in the native grasses, so parts of the course smell like literal death. And around members cuz god knows where these freaks came from.

If you're back in the northeast, you're in a region where masks have been enforced for a while, and cases are trending downwards.

Actually right now it's 1% exactly as of today so 1/100 folks have tested positive. We all know there's plenty who are asymptomatic and also those who suffered through it at home but never got tested so probably higher than 1%. Definitely will be much higher by winter time.
