Oregon prohibits overnight summer camps

I’ve been way more surprised to see Windells was still recently claiming on social media they’re still starting June 14th than I am by this news tbh

I know a lot of people will actually be surprised and bummed out by the news, and I don’t wanna start another thread about COVID debates cuz there are plenty, but separating personal opinions on COVID and strictly looking at the guidelines that Oregon and Clackamas county has been implementing it’s fairly obvious if Windells were to open it’d be severely compromised and not worth the $$$, when afaik they don’t exactly have big margins in the first place...

the real question is how will Timberline react to this news, since they opened up before this no-camp announcement, and I assume they were ramping up to get ready for all the camps since that’s where they make the majority of their $. Now they’re just open to 250 (or 500? Heard both numbers now, either way it mostly felt like a ghost town last Friday, they definitely can handle a higher capacity without affecting their distancing measures) mostly pass holders per day which isn’t exactly raking it in. Strange strange times in the ski world

huge bummer but if they're gonna cancel school then it makes sense that they would also cancel summer camps.

Doesn't really surprise me but sucks if the camps ski cals can't run. Should be interesting to see how it plays out.

Yeah saw this coming, still a bummer for everyone out there wanting to camp/ hike this summer. Oh well, theres always next year!

I'm surprised as fuck too. I was talking to a staff member today and he's under the impression they're still going to operate and Windells is posting on their website how the governors proclamation banning summer camps was subject to change or some language like that. I'm just surprised they're stringing along staff and campers like this when its pretty obvious like summer camps are definitely a no go. Flying kids and athletes in from all over the world and having them stay in close quarters for a week and then sending them back to wherever they came from? I mean I'm not even like some crazy paranoid covid person but that sounds like similar breeding grounds to cruise ships right there. I just don't understand what Windells is trying to gain by stringing their staff and campers along like this. It is strange times in the ski world.

I agree. I loved my time at camp, I couldn’t imagine having my hopes up this long just to get word at the last minute. They’ve got to be starting pre-camp soon if they haven’t already so staff should be planning to arrive within the next week or two I believe. But I haven’t heard word from anyone really at all about this!

there might be changes though, our country is about 4 weeks ahead of the US in the covid spread/stuff. We are opening up things, and kids will get to goto summercamp. we can pretty much do everything here now, except intl travel, heck, cant even goto sweden.

Windells day camps are still running and they are pushing back session 1 and 2 into July as OR governor Kate Brown may end up revising the order. Whether or not the order will actually be revised I’m not sure but since day camps are still happening I’m assuming that means Timberline will stay open? Hopefully at least

I think both momentum and windells are doing it right, offer camp until they cant. Momentum is offering full refunds, guessing windells is too, but I'm sure theyre both working on plans to make everyone whole.

The thing about day camp is in theory it's great but there are so few day campers compared to overnight. The vast majority of ski/snowboard campers travel in from out of town. So how are they going to do a day camp? Are their parents going fly in with them, rent a car and hotel room? Honestly, it's great to still offer camp but if I'm a 12 year old kid from Vermont whose parents could barely afford camp to begin with, I'm not going to day camp. I'm taking the credit and trying again next year. There's nothing wrong with that but I personally am unsure how this is actually going to play out. So I'm interested lol.
