Why Hate On Wide Skis?

During ski season I often turn to you tube videos to help clear up some areas that I struggle in. This channel has some great content that helped me ski much better across all terrain. While yes they are ski racers I fell the video from the link below misses the point that skis should be made for fun. I love my wider skis and I'm not changing a thing.

Uh no dude you want a wide ski because it provides buoyancy in so you can effectively ski deep snow. If you’re using narrow skis to pretend that you’re skiing deep powder then you’re the fucking poser. There’s a reason ski racers use narrow skis just as there’s a reason why professional powder skiers use wide skis.

I just looked at his account. Worst part is, he skis out of Squaw. Skinny skis are death on some of those Sierra cement days. Literally, your ski won’t even move sometimes. It just sinks in and stops.

Yeah but this is not how old crusty dudes ski powder. They pick an open bowl, sink up to their knees and make a big S down the hill and the next guy does the same thing so there are a bunch of S curves next to each other on the slope that look the same.

plus wider skis give you more surface area for landings, but I don’t suppose he gets much hang time

honestly though, took my thrift store special 205 cm K2 straight skis out on a pow day and it was totally different sinking completely through the snow as opposed to staying on top, made face shots a whole lot easier

I've tried a 105 obsethed and the revolt 87. The obsethed made it more relaxed and smooth, like I'd push forwards on my tips and they'd spring out of the pow on their own. However, I feel like the revolts encouraged me to push myself harder and go faster - like if you slow down, your speed dies. I'm also a bit of a masochist, the burning quads make me feel accomplished. I admit, when it was really deep (more than a foot) it was pretty impossible to maneuver on the revolts regardless of pointing them straight unless I was on something really steep.

Is preference tho, the dude in the video is a bitter guy. Like, just because it's easier for people to get started skiing pow, it doesn't mean that your skills are somehow devalued. Tbh having a narrow ass ski for racing makes it too easy.

Fun side note, the trend of having skis with more width and rocker makes shopping for a pow ski with my taste v cheap. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a k2 poacher or similar in a longer length than usual for that purpose, and something with those specifications 15 years ago would've retailed at easily $700 because of how niche they were. So like thanks, I guess? It does make finding a narrow full camber park ski pretty hard though.

He's not aggressive in the slightest, looks like a solid intermediate skier with decent form for an old dude but no part of his skiing in this video approaches aggression.

What skis btw?

I tend to love all size skis, I have from 60mm to 121mm, and dress/choose ski according to what I want from that day and the conditions. , I think my avg width is like 90 something probably if I make an avg, but there are some fun piste 100mm's theese days.

He was on the 188cm Moment Commander 118, which also happens to have a 31 m radius & is quite stiff. Needless to say, everyone at our mountain is jealous of his skills.

I prefer some rocker to keep me from crashing into tight trees, then again I crashed into a tree and broke my wrist on enforcer 110s which are supereasy to pivot... so either way I suck.
