mystery3Budget?
If you like Golfs have you considered 4-motion sportwagens or Alltrack?
4x4 sprinter is the best vehicle for a ski bum though.
brogoldenhair+1 for the foresters, get them with the headgaskets already replaced, can sleep 2 people in the back if you're cozy, great in the snow, and the first generation was only sold as a manual. XT manuals are sweet and with some work can smoke sti's, but theyre expensive and finding manuals is hard af
ThunderChicken1st gen toyota tundra. Find one with the frame done, and just like any toyota they run forever.

BigPurpleSkiSuitTake 5k and use it for a downpayment on a good used car as opposed to buying a shitbox.
JoeF2661It's awesome not having a car payment though. If I had a secure job and making enough where a few hundred a month wouldn't hurt that's the only case where I would do it.

BigPurpleSkiSuitThis is true. If you just have 5k, get what you can, but a car thatll last 10 years is far more valuable than something that might last 3
BiffbarfSubaru people are a special kind of autist. Spend 4 or 5k on a car, just to pull the engine to do the headgaskets to make sure it's reliable?! Nah dog. This ain't it.
r00kieWorth it to have a vehicle that drives great in the snow, has enough ground clearence for most 2 tracks, can sleep inside of, more than enough cargo room, and gets decent gas mileage. Was skeptical of the subie hype til I bought one and now I understand.

toastSubarus are great cars until they break. They drive really nice in the snow. They have enough clearance for SOME 2 tracks but honestly aren't the pick if you go deep on public lands. You can sleep inside of some of them, but if you're tall your only option is a pre-2010 Outback. Good cargo room and good to great gas mileage depending on your driving style.
But BiffBarf is still right, those Hondas and Toyotas are more reliable in the long run.
