I just goop wax on and let the snow scrape it off....So my base is pretty much covered at all times haha. But, from listening to people ski and stuff (you can hear a sintered base on rails/our East Coast ice) I would say maybe about 50% of ski gear has em. ALOT more snowboards have sintered bases than skis. Almost all the homies I dig with at Carinthia have sintered snowboard bases none of them know why.

The difference between UHDPE and HDPE is that there is less branching in the molecules which allows the molecules to compact better and makes a denser material. (Ultra-high density). It's also called UHMW

In short, sintered bases are better cause they're stronger.

I've been through this shit show a few years ago. To be honest, unless you are into racing you are fine waxing a couple of times a year depending on how often you ski. Fluorocarbons probably do something but I never went down that rabbit hole. In terms of racing I feel that techs don't follow a scientific method and just apply what they are being told by reps and peers on what to do for certain conditions and the rest is a placebo effect. One skier can be faster than the other, but to eliminate all variables and solely base it on a better wax job isn't really possible. Looking at regular wax, I found that sintered bases do absorb a small amount of wax. I forget the number, but it does penetrate the surface a few nanometres to the point where a single ski will absorb roughly a dime sized amount of wax over the total surface area. Doesn't seem like much, but base material is only 2mm thick to begin with, less if you grind it. There is evidence that getting a base grind or structuring doesn't do anything, but the scientific method used to get those results wasn't a very good one. From personal experience I would say that doing nothing is slower than doing something. I have a pair of skis that have never been ground or waxed (no factory grind or wax either) and they are noticeably slower than a pair that has. So there is something there. I came to the thought that it's all a conspiracy created by wax companies when skis switched to polyethylene from wood and aluminum so they wouldn't go out of business. But pe bases are still slow in certain conditions (super cold, or sticky snow) and I feel that wax helps in that regard. If you don't want to buy into that, I'd just say that wax helps pull dirt and debris off and out of the base that other applications fail at. A clean base is certainly faster than a dirty base.

The percentage of skis being sintered or extruded is a silly statistic that you shouldn't think about, it's entirely dependent on the company, their direction, costs, etc. that they factor into deciding which base material they go with. For example most kids skis are extruded to save on costs as people don't want to spend $500 on a pair of skis their kids will outgrow in a season. I'm sure you've researched the differences in extrusion vs sintering so I won't go over that. If you haven't wikipedia and non-ski related articles about those processes are a lot more in-depth than ski related crap.

But as I stated, unless you REALLY need to care about this shit, it doesn't matter, you are bashing and replacing skis all the time and being super precise on a ski that overall isn't even super precise is silly and a waste of time. Example: that hilarious video of some pro skier in the early 2000's doing a mock how to tune your skis video and he uses a file without a guide and some bullshit crayon on wax.
