dan4060I love Baldy and ski there most of the weekends when I don't go to Mammoth.
Baldy is a very unique place. I would read all the social distancing guidelines they have. Baldy is one of the few places where they CAN practice social distancing effectively. I am not saying I support them opening, but it is the kind of area where as long as people where masks and stay 10+ feet apart this COULD work. For those of you that have not been there, the analogy of a gold course is pretty accurate.
They are not selling tickets at the window or anything like that. It is not a standard opening. I would urge all of you to do some research on exactly what they are doing. The approach they are taking would simply not work at most ski areas.
Here is a link explaining their social distancing guidelines:
https://mailchi.mp/mtbaldyresort.com/mtn-report-march-437936?e=6d2aa5aef9
From what I have heard from people who have been up there it has gone quite well. People are wearing masks and staying away from each other. Folks buying tickets online have to make reservations, similar to a tee time in golf.
Like I said, Baldy is one of the few places that COULD pull this off. That being said, I don't know that I support it. I would really love to go again, but I don't know that I can do this with what is going on.
For those of you that have not skied it, Baldy does not get very crowded unless it is a powder day. They have made it quite clear that they are not grooming anything and the mountain is not for anyone who is not advanced or expert. I don't know if we are going to see huge crowds, so far things have been good. And yes, you have to wear a mask while skiing.
I am more worried going to the grocery store and seeing idiots who don't have masks on. I really can't fathom why people are not always wearing them with what is going on.
The jetty at 56th street is crowded with people not practicing social distancing. I would be much more worried about surfing there than I would about skiing Baldy, with what I have heard about how the mountain has been the last couple of days.
I'm still not going to go, and I don't know that I support it, but if one fully understands the situation it is not as reckless as one might think. Baldy can do things that larger resorts simply can't.

MXmxThey jacked up ticket prices from $20 Groupon deals to 4x more $100 full price tickets for a tiny mountain with 3 50s fixed grip lifts. They are making money now.
Places like Walmart, Costco and Target are hardly selling just essential items.
Even grocery stores are selling more then just necessities. Who gets to decide what’s a necessary item? Are Oreos, Red Bull, Doritos, coconut water and iTunes gift cards all sold at a necessary grocery store essential just because they are at a grocery store?
You are getting worked up about nothing.
ScootSkiLyfeThe people over at Mt. Baldy seem to be doing a damn good job with the social distancing restrictions.
They are eliminating large amounts of people in many ways. You have to park your car 20’ away from any other vehicle (very limited parking), you have to have a 1 day pass reserved ticket or season pass, they check you in from your vehicle, you sit alone on lifts, must be wearing a mask, no rentals, cafes are closed, bathrooms are rigorously maintained.
I hope other resorts take example and follow suit. Limiting numbers is important, I like how they compared their “traffic” with how much traffic a golf course is getting since those have started opening nationwide. I’m feeling some hope
theabortionatorNo way. People will travel. Fuck opening up ski resorts right now. Every dbag that doesnt even ski in april is going to travel just because they can't, or to get some shitty #corona hashtag on the hill.
If it was just locals even semi regional it might be differrnt but it's not. And the biggest psychos about the closures are the people who live in cities nowhere near the resorts.
It's the end of April. Almost every resort would be closed now anyway. If you live close to a patch of snow you can ski go send it, if you don't deal with it and move on.
People need to stop complainging about this shit. Stop beating the dead horse. We get it you wanna ski and you're bored. It's practically fucking summer though, move on.
ScootSkiLyfeI feel like they won’t be letting in an absurd amount of people from what I’ve heard from people who have actually skied Baldy but what do I know
MXmxExactly.
People bitching about Baldy open have never been there.

theabortionatorPeople were talking about driving from san diego to Utah and other long drives to places that were still open. It's not about how many people you come into contact with in a ski run, or riding with less than full chairs.
PEOPLE WILL TRAVEL. Some people will travel far. I don't get what people don't grasp about this. It's warm and sunny out get a new hobby. It's especially fucked when it's the only place open. They're just being greedy fucks and capitalizing on a shit time. Fuck them
50KalWalmart, Costco, Target have a majority of all essential items.
Pharmacys, large quantities of food, and toiletries. All of those are "essential items". LOL "hardly selling just essential items".
At the end of the day skiing is just recreation, same as golfing. Really don't need it right now. Be a man and suck it up.

galardogodIt’s great to see the resorts getting open again, shows a lot of heart and dedication to keeping the sport alive in these trying times. I don’t have much hope out here in the east. Sugarloaf has the base to reopen and more snow is on the way but our stay at home order ends may 13th I think and it’s late and not worth it for them. Hike seen has been phenomenal though with the late season snow. As far as safety skiing can easily Be done distanced socially .
MXmxIf I’m practicing social distancing at Target and Costco, I can easily do so ripping runs at Baldy.
I doubt I’ll ever be closer then 30 feet to someone else on a run.

theabortionatorShits wildly selfish and entitled regardless of how you feel about corona the economy or who you voted for. The same dbags lashing out at ski areas for closing will be all over this.

black...a lot of fucking "heart and dedication"? It shows a lot of selfishness and stupidity that you fucks continue to advocate to ski during a goddamn pandemic. We just passed 50k deaths in the USA, wake tf up. Unless you can literally hike out your front door to ski a patch of low risk snow then theres no real argument for it not being the selfish choice rn. Where has this "phenomenal" hike season been for you, do you have to drive to get to it?
nobodies stupid enough to think that you can't socially distance while actually skiing, I really hope thats not what you think we're arguing here...
unless you can literally teleport to the top of the hill from your house and back, than everything involving skiing makes it unnecessary and selfish to do so rn, and people are either too stupid to comprehend that, or too selfish to accept it and do it anyway. You stop at a gas station to pump gas cuz you're driving uphill and burnin up the rest of your tank? Touch the gas pump and cc slot and potentially spread. You're on the lift and you sneeze and it covers the saftey bar and potentially spread. You heading back down from skiing and more hungry than you thought so you stop for takeout instead of eating home, get a little too close when making your order and potentially spread while speaking. Suddenly have to take a shit so you just go into the restaurant bathroom and touch all kinds of stuff, potentially spreading...you get the point. None of those choices would be made if you didn't ski, not a hard concept to understand
no no no no no, fuck off. Golf courses are equally as unnecessary rn especially when carts are still allowed at a lot of them...wtf??? Resorts should absolutely not follow suit. The "hope" you feel will dwindle when all these stupid unnecessary businesses open/stay open and further add to the infection spread, and further set back the time until "normal", you can't have your cake and eat it too
ok now you're just further proving you're retarded thinking coconut water is in any way junk food like the rest of the shit you listed, not even remotely close....smh
goddamn thank you for being voices of reason in here, feel like I'm taking crazy pills reading some of the horseshit posted in here. Totally agree with all you two are saying. It's obvious the second a place like A Basin opens up (which they're hoping to) all of Denver/SLC/anywhere remotely close will all travel to come ski, that shit is beyond unacceptable and most obviously unnecessary. There is nothing necessary about skiing, thats the cold hard truth.
Before you click that downvote button take a second to ponder how necessary skiing really is as a vaccine is currently ~18 months out and the federal government is literally seizing PPE shipments from states that are desperately running out, healthcare workers putting their fucking lives on the line with shit for protection so your entitled ass can ski again in late April. If you still disagree go fuck yourselves you selfish fucking assholes
420ganjamancool moral high ground you got there. keep pretending that staying locked down for 18 months is sustainable
blackkeep pretending that going skiing rn makes that number lower, not higher
MXmxGolf courses in the area and in Minnesota among other states are open. How can golf be open and not skiing? The manager of Baldy made this point on their webpage.
MXmxPeople in San Diego drive long distances to ski all the time. Them driving to Utah is nothing new.
People in socal drive 6 hours to Mammoth to ski and think nothing of it.
In socal people drive long distances to ski regardless of a virus. You can’t have 70F year round and beaches along with skiing.
BiffbarfI don't understand people putting themselves on a 'saving lives' pedestal thinking that invalidates all the other problems associated with the virus, especially when it is expected that everyone will contract the virus and the social distancing measures were just to take the load off the healthcare system.

Edit: Also, who the hell do people think they are thinking they get to choose what's essential and what isn't. That's sounds like some nazi shit to me.

BiffbarfIdk your beef with me dude, but it's time to let it go.
blackthats a huge middle finger to health care workers on the front lines. SARs-CoV-2 viral load is a huge factor in determining if you are on the asymptomatic side or the near death on a ventilator side of things. By being around it significantly more than pretty much anybody else simply puts them at a way higher viral load risk. Are you really saying saving their lives isn't important rn? Keeping doctors healthy and safe seems pretty fucking important IMO
CLQI don't have a beef with you, I view all comments in a vacuum, it just so happens that every comment you post is dog shit.
420ganjamanhey did you tards know that none of the hospitals are overwhelmed

theabortionatorPeople golf locally. Everyone has golf course. Not everyone has mtns with snow and people absolutely travel to ski. Highlands is gonna reopen too and I'm guess it's more regarding the lawsuit or pr than anything else considering they usually close around the 13th.
Biffbarfespecially when it is expected that everyone will contract the virus and the social distancing measures were just to take the load off the healthcare system
CLQAh yes, saying that grocery shopping is essential but skiing/going to concerts and bars isn't essential is some nazi shit!! Were you even able to graduate high school?
Dogfartsource on this?
BiffbarfWould you honestly like to know my opinion, or do you just want to keep screeching like a petulant child?
https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/three-months-into-the-pandemic-here-is-what-we-know-about-the-coronavirus/2020/03/28/6646f502-6eab-11ea-b148-e4ce3fbd85b5_story.html?outputType=amp
This goes into pretty good detail, tldr: social distancing measures can contain the virus if they're extreme enough to beat the reproductive rate, else herd immunity through infection or a vaccine are the only options.
CLQI enjoyed when you were just a pussy and down voted people without saying anything.
BiffbarfOption B, got it.
CLQCall me whatever you want but if you it gets you to shut the fuck up, i'm happy.
CLQI don't have a beef with you, I view all comments in a vacuum, it just so happens that every comment you post is dog shit.
BiffbarfYou really gonna cunt up this thread over beef huh
CLQI'm not the one calling the government Nazis because grocery stores are open and bars/ski resorts are closed. You really going to say something super stupid like that and then expect no one to comment on that? You have to be the dumbest person i've ever had the displeasure of talking to.
r00kieAt least biff doesn't just hurl playground insults at everyone he disagrees with while providing nothing to the conversation at hand.

MXmxI think you are thinking of mini golf. Yes, that clientele typically doesn’t travel far to get their mini golf fix on.
If we are talking big boy golf, then why do I constantly see tons of golf clubs at John Wayne airport oversized pickup when I get my skis? I’ll see about 1 dozen golf clubs and 1-2 skis. People travel all the time for golf.
