Painted Afterbang skis

Hey fam,

i have a pair of Line afterbang skis in decent condition laying around. I’m very bored and have wanted to custom paint them. Sand them down and get to work.

I remember a threat years ago with people posting designs and their art on the skis.

couldn't find that thread so post up any custom A-Bang designs!!

I hope you don't plan on skiing them afterwards. Any paint will be ruined as soon as the ski flexes or when water gets under it.Painting beater skis could be fun for a pondskim/gaper day event perhaps.

I've painted a pair of skis before and they came out pretty well actually. You just have to make sure to use a couple coats and to go back over it with a sealer and it should be relatively good. It definitely will still chip, but what ski doesn't have some chipping on it?

When me and my friend painted our skis as a joke we sanded and primed everything and thought It was going to be legit. We ended up with the paint flaking off all over the skis. We didn't use a clear coat or sealer but I don't see how it would have helped.

I also say a guy who sanded and used a wood burner to make a cool top sheet design

^thats the paint one. i also remember someone using a soldering iron to burn a graphic onto some afterbangs/stepups, turned out fkn rad but can’t find it right now :(

Best way I have found for painting on veneer is first apply clear gesso to the wood. Enamel paint, 1 shot is the best but it isnt cheap. Seal with spray spar urethane. To deepen the gains after the spar has been applied use an exterior wood wax.

Sorry about that, maybe this will help

Gesso seals the gains so the paint doesnt bleed into the wood.


1 shot is super strong paint.


Spray spar urethane is used to seal the paint, go easy with it and slowly build the urethane to allow an even finish.


Exterior wood wax is used if you want to deepen the wood with a little extra protection, it doesnt last forever and will need to be reapplied to keep that look.

Lost pics from the first pair i did but these are pretty similar. Cheaped out and went with a spray on wood sealer and wished I had done something more. Having a belt sander is definitely a perk too, if not that then a circular sander for sure. Also tons of different sand grits for finishing and tearing the graphics off
