ski.loonLet me ask you this - how much do you want back? $100? $200? What's reasonable for you? Assuming you paid anywhere from $650-$800ish for your pass, what are you trying to accomplish?

There are millions of people filing for unemployment, millions who don't know how they will pay rent, get fucking food next month - if this is you, I'm very sorry. If not, shut up about getting back a small amount of money for a sport we have all dumped thousands into.

Also - how many days have you skied this year? Is it less than 5? If so, why did you by a pass, and if its more, than you probably got the value out of your pass.

IanAvery-Leafseems early for Alterra to be jumping the gun on ski season 20/21, when sadly at this point nobody can confidently say things will open like normal come ~November. RRhighriderI would happily pay full price if they did not furlough full time, year round, employees. How much revenue comes between mid March to mid June? I guess if you are buying the passes for a large family the discount helps but to me it seems like a cheap ploy. The pass sales for 2020/2021 are down a great amount and they releasing the discount to generate more sales in May once hopefully the stay at home orders start to be lifted.

eheathIKON is adverting right now because thats what they do this time of year, its not necessarily specific to the current situation. The amount of revenue they see march - june is probably 1/10 of what they make the rest of the year, march has some spring breakers but otherwise its all pass holders.

RRhighriderYou don't think the additional discount for renewing and extension of the sale are related to the current situation? The announcement came a week before Ikon pass prices were scheduled to increase. I will buy a base pass either way but am interested with how they respond to the decrease in demand for the passes. The uncertainty of the current situation makes the discount less valuable and Ikon/Epic sales are more sensitive to these situations as the selling point of these passes are the ability to make destination trips.

As you said, nobody knows for sure what's going to happen, but you also say that resorts probably won't open like normal next year. You could be right, you could be wrong. Personally, I'm a little sick of bombastic, eye catching headlines about society being forever changed and the virus lasting forever and ever, because as you said, nobody knows what going to happen. What I do know is that one of my good friends is an english teacher in southern china, and things look like they are going back to normal there. Everyone is wearing masks but people are riding trains going to work etc.

China/SK are reopening sooner due to the aggressive surveillance/tracking system they’ve got over there to understand and contain the spread better, Americans seem to not be down for that tradeoff if privacy for public health hence our lockdown that drags on indefinitely

I assume buying a ski pass isn’t exactly at the top of people’s minds rn with this uncertainty in the air. Will skiing open like normal next fall? Probably? But like I said nobody can say 100% sure. I’d rather be pleasantly surprised by a bleak outlook turning better than this every ~two weeks we tack on another two weeks crap that’s happening now, it was beyond obvious nothing was re-opening in April. Everything that I’ve been reading is the only way to truly stop a second (or third, etc) wave is to get a vaccine deployed, which isn’t happening in time for next ski season this fall :(

As businesses start to re-open I really don’t see ski areas at the top of the priority list (in terms of general safety/necessity, not NS members priorities), please correct me if I’m wrong tho

Agree with everything you're saying here, my hope is that once hospitals have more beds and more ventilators and the curve has been flattened enough and we have enough testing then second and third waves won't be such a big deal because the hospitals will be prepared. Shit like thermal cameras could help a lot too. I don't think people are gonna stay locked in their rooms until a vaccine is found, that seems a little extreme to me.

At a certain tipping point people will care more about the economy than health and will reject the quarantine. Not advocating for it, just predicting it. Today, the same idiots in Michigan who complained about BLM protests blocking the roads all joined together in their cars (And some not in cars and not 6+ft away...) to block streets surrounding a hospital, which directly caused ambulances to not be able to make it. All this to reject the stricter stay at home guidelines in a state with the 3rd highest deaths rn...sadly I think we’re gonna see a lot more situations like this the more quarantine drags on, Americans don’t value public health as much as a lot of the rest of the world

skeirmanI emailed Alterra just to get their thoughts on what happens if I buy a pass today but the season never starts. They confirmed that I would be SOL the passes are totally non-refundable. Also, buying pass insurance would not help for something like another cancellation because of covid.

I stand behind Governor Gretchen’s stricter order and wish more states would follow. It’s beyond mind boggling to me that there’s still multiple states that currently have no stay at home orders at all...This damage of dragging on the quarantine with weak ass restrictions is like a band aid...just actually lock things down for a shorter amount of time, it’ll be shitty but necessary, rather than all these non essential businesses/activities whining that they’re “essential” for weeks..?
