What are your opinions on helmets

Recently, I've been wondering what people's opinions are on wearing a helmet while skiing. I personally wear a helmet when I'm at any resort unless it's a warm spring day and I'm not hitting the park, but if I'm at home hitting the backyard setup I don't really feel a need to unless I'm trying anything stupid.

I like to not wear a helmet a few days in the spring when it's nice out and I can wear a t shirt and sunnies. But I'd never see why I wouldn't want to wear one when it's cold out and I'm wearing normal ski clothes

I always wear a helmet no matter what. Protecting your brain is better than looking cool. There are also some pretty cool helmets.

Always wear one when riding park, but a few warm days in the spring I'll cruise a groomer or two without one

I wear one one every day. Park, groomers, powder, slush, spring winter, rails, jumps, resort backcountry.

I've warn a helmet almost all the time since maybe 2007 ish. Grew up without em. Rode tons of days without em. Glad I made the switch.

I broke a helmet into 2 pieces(connected by about 3 or 4 inches of plastic) at a big air at night in NY in 08/09. Both my bad head injuries I was wearing a helmet.

I had a friend hit me in the helmet with the side of his board a couple years ago. That glanced right off no sweat although a lil scary.

Idk, do whatever you want. I liked and was used to not wearing a helmet. Honestly im so used to it i dont mind it now. Hell people are wearing them in street edits occasionally now, most kids grow up wearing them because that's the deal with mom.

If you're even debating it you probably should be wearing one.

Will you be fine if you don't wear one? Probably, maybe? Nobody expects the wild spill and it can be on anything. Just ripping groomers and hook into some weird snow, some noob turns into you, etc.

Do whatever you want but be safe yo. Head injuries are not chill, they really aren't funny, and they stack up.

always always ALWAYS. I had a really good friends of mine and a ski mentor pass away from not rocking a brain bucket. He was hitting a dfd urban rail, slammed his head and went into a coma. He then passed away 6 days later

I skied with this kid that wanted to land a 360 but instead of being reasonable and wearing a helmet for a trick hes not comfortable with decided not to. He 270 and landed side ways and smacked his head super hard on hard snow and had to go down to the lodge and stay for the whole day after about 40min of skiing. ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET, ESPECIALLY WHEN TRYING SOMETHING NEW.

I always wear a helmet. However im fairly certain i heard that brain injuries have gone up since people really started wearing helmets. People are over confident in a helmets ability to protect you and thus try shit they wouldn't and shouldn't. Like most safety equipment, you really dont want to use your helmet. Def has left me with a stiff whiplashed neck instead of a bleed brain and cracked skull mulriple times. Thank you Smith Maze

I always wear a helmet when pushing myself in the park or when there is harder icy conditions. I think all helmets are ugly and cumbersome but I have had crashes where a helmet saved me from injury. The feeling of skiing with just a beanie on your head is just too good to give up.

It seems like the trend is increasing to not wear helmets.



I dont get it. After seeing someone close to me get paralyzed for life, it changes your perspective on protecting your head and back. Not only does it affect you, but also affects those around you. Dont be selfish.



Freak accidents can and will happen, even if youre just out cruising. Another snowboarder friend of mine was cruising down a blue run, caught an edge, and broke his neck.





If you have any sort of intelligence, you will wear a helmet.

please wear a helmet, although you'll still probably get a concussion with or without, it will stop your head from splitting open and leaving you brain on the hill

One time some kid popped out behind a tree going uphill trying to make it to the chairlift. I was carrying some decent speed and I swerved and he swerved the same direction...we smacked into eachother and I bear hugged him to try to dissipate the energy. Luckily both of us wear wearing helmets but the helmets smacked the heck out of eachother and I’m super happy I was wearing it. If I wasn’t my head would’ve been messed up cause he was wearing a helmet. Countless other times my headache after crashing could’ve been a concussion if I wasn’t wearing a helmet. It’s smart and they can even be somewhat stylish.

In Africa me and my buddy were lapping the park a bit, place was super dead and snow was really good carving snow. Trail isnt that ride, im reg hes goofy, and we both euro carved into each other. Tried to jump over him/out of the way but it was too late. We were 3 or 4 towers up I think and people heard the collision at the bottom I guess. Full on football smash.

Idk if i rode down or got a ride on the snowmobile. He was out and broke his collarbone and was fucked for a bit when he woke up. Knew who he was but didnt know where he was really or wtf happened. Young enough he bounced back pretty well and fast.

Helmets were required for the park there. We'd prolly have been wearing them anyway as I always do and we were both employees. But that woulda been a lot worse if we didn't have em on.

I don't think I've ever had another collision like that and I hope I never do, but glad we had the old buckets on.

it doesnt make you invincible, its not like bulletproof armor or something. You can still get jacked up wearing a helmet but you got better odds of not having major mental health and physical health issues down the road if you wear one.

I try to wear it as much as possible because of freak accidents . I do take it off a lot when booting or skinning uphill because I get too hot but I will leave it on if I can stand it. Helmets are relatively cheap when you think about the cost of copays

I'm just confused by the people who don't wear one all the time, for example early season at Sunday River I saw a dude with no helmet do a backflip, catch his tips on the knuckle and fly to the bottom, most likely getting severely concussed. I was really just wondering why people who don't wear helmets (which there are a lot of) decide to do so.

most helmets won't prevent a concussion (unless you got MIPS)
but will prevent you cracking tf outta your skull

I wear one all the time. I feel too unsafe to even try basic tricks while lapping without one. Also I’ll add, no helmet looks a lot better than helmet, style-wise, but having a helmet on doesn’t make you look bad obv.

However I’ve ridden a few spring days without one, and I never wear one on the backyard setup.

Just by casual park lapping, I’ve never even hit my head. Knock on wood but I never fall either which is weird, I always stay on my feet. That being said when I choose to go big, I’ve had very few falls where I was super glad to have a helmet on.

tldr: wear a helmet anyways even if you never have any bad falls

I still don't see how it can't. Anything that softens the impact. If you land on a mat you can still get comcussed but the risk goes down than concrete.

You can absolutely get a concussion with or without one but I don't see how it wouldn't have an impact.

yeah it is physics as far as reducing the force that is goes into the head. as far as concussions go IDK that everyone even agrees about what that me as means. Less force to the noggin’ is good though we can agree on that. Take a poll and ask if people want to get punched in the head hard or not as hard and I predict most will choose not as hard

Yeah. Even with bubble wrapped taped to your head you could still get one. Especially qith a aolid edge catch and whip lash. Your head is snapping back so hard.

They may not prevent concussions but I'd be surprised if they didn't lesson at least most of them to some extent. I haven't seen anything that even hints to that. "Helmets prevent all concussions and will save you from doing stupid shit" isn't true, but the "helmets don't work hats are cool" seems pretty bunk too.

Idk people can do whatever. I'm going to keep rocking a helmet.

I'm kinda trash so I need to have that helmet in case I die or some shit.
That being said, if i was a pro I wouldn't wear a helmet on good days. The no helmet style is just so drippy and I can't get over it. Bdog, Siver, the list goes on.

I'm sure it does help a bit. However, concussions are caused by rapid acceleration/deceleration of the brain which causes it to hit the inside of your skull. Helmets generally use a hard plastic shell with a hard foam core, so that type of padding wont really stop the accel/decel forces enough to prevent a concussion if you really smack your head. That being said, I would 100% rather hit my head with a helmet on, because if you slide off a rail wrong and hit the side of your head the helmet will do a great deal to stop a subdural hematoma or something like that.

I visited the Giro factory once when in CA years ago and they took me into their test facility that has a machine that measures the G forces on a head sized sensor. They were testing helmets and showed me the data in real time of a helmet test vs the null (No helmet) and it was crazy how much that foam absorbs the impact, even with the super low profile road bike helmets.

In any case I always wear one nomatter what. I do a lot of tree skiing too and the thought of smashing my face against a tree trunk with no protection sounds pretty shitty. Hell, even if im rocking a shirtless day in the spring I will still wear my lid.

I always ski with one. I'm not maxing out my sendometer daily, but all of my worst injuries have been fucking around where I least expect to hurt myself. I usually don't wear one when I skate or bike to class.

Wear one every day resort or touring - only exception being if I’m hiking for like 8 hours to get 10 mellow turns on a snow patch in summer. Turns All Year is a weird thing.

I always wear a helmet. Personally I find them comfortable and if it is a cold day they are warm. Unlike a toque or a beanie they wont fall off if it is windy or something and they keep your brain safe.
