How far to detune edges on rockered ski?

Im wondering where to transition from detuning to leaving the edge sharp on a rockered ski. Should i start detuning right in the middle of the inflection point where the ski goes from camber curvature to rockered curvature? Also should i detune gradually or just go from 100% sharp edge to 100% detune?

I would recommend detuning the ski wherever the ski meets the rail. If you do a lot of nose presses and tail presses, you may want to detune a decent amount of real estate. Most people probably need to detune 18"-24" worth of edge

Thats not what i was asking. I was womdering how far into the rocker/camber border i should detune, not the area underfoot for hitting rails...

I'd start with just the tips and tails where they transition into the deeper part of the rocker. This will just keep the tips and tails from being hooky.

If I feel like a ski needs to be detuned, I typically start about a cm before the contact point (i.e., about a cm before where the cambered section transition to rocker) and then detune from there to the ends of the ski. And I always detune gradually. Usually I'll take a gummy stone out with me, start with ~5 passes with the stone, ski a few laps, and then keep detuning a bit more if I need to you. You can always detune more, but detuning too much is trickier to fix.

From Tip to Tail.

Full detune from tip to start of effective edge.
Progressive detune from start of effective edge to start of running length.
Gummi within running length.
Progressive detune from end of running length to end of effective edge.
Full detune from end of effective edge to tail.

Level of gummi and progressive detune up to personal preference.

I'd defer to Iggy but my take is that you can always detune more, so if you're worried about detuning too much, just do what you described and you could always take a gummy further into the ski later. And FWIW, I never found the ARV 106Ti to feel very hooky so you're probably fine to go easy on the detuning, especially if you're not hitting rails.

Cool. Yeah i weigh like 210 and ive fucked up skis before when i wasnt even as heavy as i am now so...
Being weightless is much more fun to me anyways.

Some people like the feel. I detune all my skis, but park skis I do extra underfoot.

Actually, question for @iggyskier and @patagonialuke. I just bought a Magnus 102 (which comes w the park detune) and I was wondering how different the ski will feel? Never been on a detuned ski before, and I was thinking about throwin a Shift on it as my 70/30 resort/touring ski, but I’m worried about the detune effecting how it skis. Any input from anyone helps

I've never skied an ON3P with their park detune so I won't be of much help here.

I mostly just do the tips and tails with a gummy stone + diamond file, make a couple passes over the length of the ski as well. It depends on the factory tune but some skis are super catchy on edge and hooky in variable conditions. De-tuning just make them more smeary and smother through transitions. Much different from totally rounding over the edges underfoot for rails.

I like mine all with a heavy detune, granted I’ve never had on3ps park detune. Caylors I run with literally dull round edges, billy goats I detune literally the top half of the ski, and jeffreys are still too sharp and catchy for my liking, so I’ll take another round of gummy stoning to them. Still trying to get them dialed


I wouldn’t worry, I love having a loose feeling ski. That way when you’re going Mach 9 and get tossed around/trying to make an abrupt turn you’re not catching an edge and getting tomahawked
