Replying to Ethics Debate: Holland Zaandam and Rotterdam
Brief background: Zaandam cruise ship departed Chile early March and has since been denied port at every country since Chile. The Rotterdam is also another affected ship. They have been sailing their way back to America. The Zaandam has well over 1800 people on it and a combination of Americans and foreign nationals. Governments are trying to force them from docking. 4 passengers have died already. Hundreds are sick and at least 2 have tested positive for covid-19. They don't have enough tests but it's safe to say their cases are in the hundreds.
This is insane. We have to draw a line between fear and humanity. For fuck sakes, find a way to let them dock. You don't have to let them go free. Set up a field hospital in a gymnasium and keep them all there. Quarantine the passengers. Separate the sick from well. Send the severely sick to hospitals, foreigners or not. Florida and other states saying they can't dock is so childish considering their spring break fiasco and that the virus is already rampant in their state. This seems medically unethical, but politically beneficial. How would you feel if you were on this ship that departed before all this shit started and now the entire world including your own country is abandoning you? The facts are that if they cannot dock and get medical assistance, it is possible that the entire ship could get infected if not already and hundreds of people could die. I understand the greater good morale but this is an extremely excessive reaction considering the virus is already in these states. If they're careful, they can minimize the impact these passengers will have on their medical system and spread of the virus.
I know opinions will vary on this but please give some good arguments either for or against this. I'm flabbergasted at what's going on right now. One could say that it's easy for me to act this way when it's not my backyard, but go ahead. Dock them and fly them all to Columbus. We are better than this.
