Unfortunately we don't have proper swaps around here. I do get at least two seasons out of most stuff, I have two kids so the hand-me-downs get used. We also have a group of friends which we give and receive hand-me-down goods.

If you do a lot of digging and time things properly with end of season sales the kids gear isn't too expensive really. I found the smash 7 or menace 90 with Look nx 10s for ~$170

I know a shop by me will do a buyback program. Go in one year and buy the kiddos all the gear they need. The next year the shop buys it all back and then you get the kiddos new gear to fit their growth. Sounds like this particular shop buys the gear back at a pretty good rate to, not like the bookstore in college. Not sure if any of your local shops do that but might be worth looking into.

How old/big is your kid? My girls would get used swap skis every year. Now that they are 12 and 14 we are into skis more like you are mentioning.

9 and 6, both have been skiing since the were two or so.

Got it. I'm no expert--but you still need some weight to flex/turn the good kid skis/small adult skis. How much does your 9 y.o. weigh? You'd probably be well-served by calling J Skis and asking their advice. J-son speaks the truth.

He's around 70lbs (31kg) and I ended up pulling the trigger on some Armada Tantrum 138cm. A bit fatter than I was looking for at 98mm waist but I think he'll be pumped and the deals are absolutely rolling right now so I couldn't pass them up.

i had a kid come into a shop i worked in a couple years back in new zealand with his parents. He was adamant that he needed some 110+ underfoot skis. Now NZ rarely has pow days of more than 10cm anyway, this kid was 5ft at a push and probably weight less than 35kg. I tried to explain to him that a ski of that size for kid his size was overkill but he was having none of it. The parents obviously wanted to listen to me but this kid was a little brat and tried to tell me i didnt know what i was talking about, either way no sale was made, i wasnt about to make this kids parents buy some dumb skis for a kid that will likely moan about how hard they are to ski after day 1 anyway.

We're primarily going to be skiing in the PNW so lots of heavy wet snow.

The Tantrum is lighter than the Ranger FR JR which is 8mm narrower in equivalent lengths. The Bent Chetler Mini looks pretty great too but I missed the deal I was watching.
