Was Khai overly harsh on Jesper?

Like don’t get me wrong, I didn’t quite care for the style of Jesper’s video, but I can still appreciate it for being unique. I just don’t really think it’s fair to say that he half assed it, because he clearly didn’t.

khai was a judge, his job was to pick apart criticize and critique all of the edits. They spent 2 full days shooting the interviews for that show and every judge had dozens of awesome and negative things to say about every rider. They cut it up into a 45 min piece choosing a select few comments of the dozens from the judges to show you,. If you've watched any of Jesper's high end edits its clear he's capable of amazing production value. This was shot entirely on a gopro by his girlfriend, a judge is not harsh for picking up on that, he's doing his job and you just happened to see the one negative comment from the judges the editors chose. /thread

You make a good point, but think if Jesper had wanted to go down that route (high quality production) he would have done so. I’m guessing he purposely went for that gopro look because he thought it would bring a unique vibe to his video, which it certainly did. Lack of effort? I personally don’t think so. A paycheck from GoPro maybe, but not laziness.

I kinda feel like he did.

There's so many details the Real Ski judges take into account, and Jesper's edit makes it look like he didn't give much consideration to all that. Maybe he doesn't know, maybe he couldn't make it happen in his home town, whatever.....there's a reason they give Brady Perron a gold medal when Phil Casabon wins.

Jesper definitely has the talent to be there, but his edit didn't look like it belonged there. I can totally understand Khai being the one to make that call, 'cos he was probably looking forward to what it could've been.

see this is exactly my point, all of the judges had lots of critiques. They include literally 2 from khai and you literally get kids calling him "salty AF for 60 mins" i wish covid was only for dumb people

I liked Jesper the most... looked like a damn videogame that I wouldnt try even with 20 lives when I was in my prime.

I dont care about production when what I see is not human.



Judges are judges, they have criterias to follow and they ahve to live by them.

They certainly do tend to reward the expert production that we’ve seen in Phil’s videos, but at the same time, Jesper isn’t Phil: his style is (obviously) radically different. His production was unlike anything we’ve seen in real ski, but it fit his unique style of skiing well. I get that it’s a contest but I’d still rather see the athletes stay true to themselves and their style, even if it’s not my cup of tea.

Now, I’m not saying that Jesper shouldn’t have been criticized. I just think Khai could have maybe gone about it a little differently.

Wait, I wanna make sure you understand what I was saying. It's not about Jesper vs Phil, it's about Brady deserving a medal as much as Phil does when the edit is that good. All the judges know this, 'cos they've all been there and worked with people to make the same thing.

you are right about them selecting the couple cuts and khai getting unlucky w/ the couple clips they selected... but despite all that... he said some really condescending shit, in a miserable tone of voice... twice... despite ur excuses he's still a clown... no fucking way TW had the same ridiculous attitude...

Khai wasn't too harsh. Jesper put together a part just because he needed to and it showed. It is obvious his attention was focused elsewhere on other comps and whatnot.

Now, when Khai went off on how Zahner got absolutely bodied and didn't followup, that kinda rubbed me the wrong way. I felt he took a rad, creative approach with the cutscene after nearly dying on that feature.

Should have let the judges speak more. Only got to hear a sentence maybe two per clip. With more context, I wonder if Khai's points wouldn't have come across differently. Same for Hornbeck on Noah.

Hornbeck and milbocker had a bunch of go pro shots in 2018 and did a much better job with them imo

One one hand I think it's incredibly impressive that Jesper can put out an edit that can still hold a candle in XGames Realski without actually really trying but I can understand Khai being upset about it.

Think about it this way, if you were a film-based rail skier and XGames made a contest specifically for that type of skiing, then gave a spot away to a dude who is still heavy on the contest circuit and already incredibly well know, and THEN that dude doesn't give it his full effort? I know I'd be pissed. Think about how much effort he and LJ put into their entries then contrast it with Jesper filming a part only in his hometown, with his GF filming....The skiing is still mindblowing, but kinda misses the point of the entire realSki contest? I imagine that Khai is just salty that the spot didnt go to someone who would make it 100% of their focus like he did, and the rest of the contestants seem to.

(FWIW I think Jesper is still a really good dude, and I think its LEGENDARY if his actually GF filmed that part for him.)

Good, we need more honesty in the ski industry. Its painful to see people acting fake because they're terrified to give their real opinions. God forbid they potentially insult their handlers! Oh sorry, I mean sponsors. "Ah man you know, he gave everything he had, looked like he was having a lot of fun out there, great times, great vibes" Yeah, riveting stuff coming from the Stepford Skiers. Fuck that shit.

Given the insane stuff he's done in the past, Jesper clearly half assed his entry. Basic setups, basic tricks... it was a perfect reflection of his girl. His entry was pathetic and an insult to Real Ski.

His edit is further proof of why you don't hit urban with the pussy you're slamming. Just ask Ian Cosco. He shared an urban segment with his girlfriend and it turned out to be one of the weakest urban segments in skiing history. I'd love to see the behind the scenes footage. "Jesper be careful! That's super dangerous!" "Are you sure that's OK?" "OMG OMG *screams*" "Ugh like haven't you spent ENOUGH time on this?" "I'm cold! Let's go inside and warm up." "Can we go out to eat?" "You skied away, doesn't that work? I don't think they'll careeee."

Skiing with your girlfriend is equivalent to skiing while injured except you have a say in the matter. Jesper shot himself in the foot on this one. Don't expect him to be invited back to compete next year. Good job, Jesper. Great career move.

Couple things here (not just for you biff, but also OP)

1. These TV shows are a cut down of hours of interviews, every segments has pros/cons of each skier, they picked one of a khai talking about jesper for ONE SCENE boys calm down about khai being harsh, this is just TV shit.

2. how the edit is filmed is 10% of the judges criteria, we're always asked to talk about it even though it barely matters, jespers video being filmed on an insta360 doesn't matter really, but they're going to talk about how its different and how it could potentially effect the judging.

This take is just wrong brother. Khai is not salty about jesper at all, the judges pick the riders, you all (not just you grandthings) need to stop assuming how someone is feeling based of a very short video clip made for TV. Everything made for TV has to have both pros and cons, you cant just feed people positives, its far to boring. The fact you came up with this big hypothesis confirms that you guys overthink this kinda shit way too much.

Lol yep - I posted this before I actually watched it.

After seeing, its clear that the behind the scenes interviewer just asked for one piece of negative feedback on each edit and Khai was prolly the only one that gave actual critiques. (The only other slightly negative thing even brought up is Hornbeck saying he didnt love the coloring of Mango's edit.) You can tell especially when he's talking about the Zahner slam that he was grasping for something to provide feedback on.

Go check out his instagram, he wasn't able to get several of the bangers he wanted to, so there are definitely a couple of filler shots. I also feel like people might have had too high of expectations. If he was coming in as a nobody people would have been blown away by his tricks, but we're all used to his crazy flips off and on to rails. As far as the "look" of his edit, Jesper has been cultivating that editing style for many years now, it would have been weird if he had changed it just for realski. And it disagree with the entire concept of this "but his edit didn't look like it belonged there". Realski shouldn't have a look, like that's kinda the whole point of the contest in the first place. Every rider gets to bring their own unique style of riding, trick choice, and editing to the contest. Nobody wants to just want a bunch of identical clips. That's why big comp riding has gotten stale. Jesper's entry may not have been the best and it's fair to say that he didn't go as big on all of his tricks as some of the other guys, but I find Khai's comments weird, and an unproductive critique. It would be no diferent than someone complaining about Magnus or Mangos unconvential looks to their entry.

Jesper's skiing was good but it's a video contest, not a trick contest. In my personal opinion Jesper's video sucked ass hard because of the filming.

That's cool he wanted more than he got for the edit, but you know that's the deal for like every person who's ever made an edit right? I guess what I meant was his edit didn't look like it belonged in the street, kinda the way you can spot a tourist from a local wherever you go. Not saying that about his tricks or style, it's more the aesthetic of the edit.

So I watched the special and there's a lot of b-roll that gives more context to each skier's edit, but I'll bet it's just the edits that got judged. First thing Khai says "He has the potential to win this contest, but..." so what's the problem? It's like he's saying he knows Jesper could make a Real Ski video twice as good as this one.

Kinda wack imho to say Sam shouldn't have put that clip in his edit. The slam was fucking gnarly. and it was a dope transition. It obviously played a huge part, and caused less time to film etc. Would rather see that then some dumb b roll footage. judges gotta be judges so can't be salty trwd khai

I'm a sucker for slick cinematography, and I think that anything shot exclusively on a GoPro with no real alterations after feels sorta soulless. I think it's great for one of those days, or slvsh where there's not a whole lot of time to set up.

I don't think realski is supposed to be either of those things. It's a 90 second long urban movie. I mean, imagine if romance or welcome was shot exxlusively on gopro with minimal editing. Neither of those movies would be as banger as they are.

A hard fall doesn't improve your score, you fucking jackass. Khai was right, all urban skiers take hard hits, its nothing special. Its pointless to include a fall on a feature he never hits again. That was as pointless as him saying he needs to wear a helmet after he racked his brain.

But hey, after a few seasons of him skiing like an idiot he'll make a decent mumble rapper while trying to hold basic conversations so there's that....
