Just because someone's fried af now doesn't mean that a good donation, a mediocre effort, and a few pulled strings couldn't land them in a nice basket weaving degree 15 or so years ago. True or untrue, it's good fun to add scrutiny to his claim because to call him out means he either needs to jump through a bunch of hoops to prove he did go or he just has to sit there and have everyone assume he didn't.
