Los Angeles / California / Sierras...Info, Recommendations, Resources?

Hi All,

I moved to LA a few years ago from Colorado. I skied a lot in CO and did a bit of backcountry skiing there at Berthoud Pass and also a couple of hut trips.

However, since moving here, I have only managed to get out to go skiing for the very first time this year at Mt. Baldy about a month ago. I went again a week or two ago, and now I really want to find some places to go backcountry skiing.

I got a couple of guidebooks from the library and I will be planning to re-certify with a level one Avalanche class that is offered at Mt. Baldy next year.

I also joined a MeetUp group for backcountry skiing in California.

Curious to know if people in Southern California have any great recommendations for:

*Places to ski? Tours or day trips?
*Guidebooks?
*Huts?
*Groups or clubs?

I've been reading the Sierra Descents blog which has a lot of great info.

Any recommendations or advice for a newcomer (kind of) to California would be fantastic.

Yo! whatd you think of baldy? i just moved here in January from the east coast, i know people ski the 3 T's off the back side of baldy when they get snow sadly i think the season will be coming to an end here shortly. i also know there is a hut and people ski the bowl you can see from the top of baldy. ill attach a link, SierraDescents Backcountry Skiing Index - SierraDescents.com let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks dshiland! That's a great list to check out in the link you shared. I thought Mt. Baldy was great -- I am aware of the hut there, but have not stayed there or visited yet (on the list!). It is a cool place to ski because you have huge views of dry climate and city beneath you, and meanwhile you are skiing on some long flowing runs. It was a very laid back place and not too crowded on the days I was there, with a cool lodge with folks hanging out drinking beers and just taking a few runs and relaxing away from the city. It is fairly small, but you can tell that some love goes into keeping it going. Season definitely coming to an end, but will be good to put some plans together for next season for some backcountry trips. Thanks for sharing the link! Take care.
