Coronavirus Shutting Resorts Down in the US

2 resorts on the east coast (Berkshire East and Catamount) are shutting down for the season. Both of these resorts are in Berkshire county MA where there's been a crazy outbreak so this kind of seems appropriate.

But do you think we'll see larger resorts start to do the same? This seems like this could have a pretty big financial impact on the ski industry.

I bet the backcountry will get super crowded in certain places cause of this. People will be fiending for the shred. Tucks could be bonkers this spring if all the lifts stop spinning

Skinning up some of these closed resorts too. There's still good coverage in the woods in some areas.

After christmas and prez day weekend/ski week in February the resorts have pretty much made their years. The season is winding down in a lot of places and those that tend to stay open later into the spring don't make a lot of money during that period.

Tahoe is FINALLY getting a fucking storm. Ill he pissed if we get shut down. Also hoping 80 closes because if there's gonna be any corona up here it's going to come up with all the bay area fucks. Had to go shopping yesterday and there were already enough up here in the morning. Not getting run over in the parking lot or even the store was a challenge and motherfuckers buying out the whole isle if toilet paper. Luckily they missed a block at the other end. Fuck you, It's payday and I'm trying to get some friggin groceries.

Also have 3 comps to homewoods, 4 to boreal, 4 to tahoe donner and can go free to ski ranch. Plus have my DP and epic passes.

Been waiting to use those comps for spring. It was spring but I was out for 3 weeks letting my brain heal. Also saved them a bit because wasn't sure if I'd quit northstar.

Leave winter alone!

Monarch Mountain still open. I am going cat skiing on the 21st so they better keep it up for another week. Its actually my only day skiing this year so Im going to be pissed if they shut it down.

what kind of effect do you guys think this will have on ski videos? will more pros be trying to get after it in the BC and in the streets? With so many businesses and stadiums etc shut down there may be some rare opportunities for shots that would normally be too high bust

Then again, who knows, maybe open again for late April and May. Still seems unlikely.

This is complete and utter bullshit. Just close down the facilities and run the chairs with two people per chair, or 1 if a double. Ski resorts, outside of the facilities are probably one of the lowest likely places of transmission. The people skiing will likely be the core skiers only as all the jerries will be staying at home on their mounds of toilet paper. Sent a message to places asking about uphill travel; unlikely yes but worth a shot to ask.

Fuck vail. All they had to do was announce and then alterra followed suit. It's like all the ski resorts are giant fucking sheep. This federal stimulus bill didn't help either. All it did was provide the green light on places to close cuz they know now that they are getting funding.

Also gotta love seeing IKON and Epic ads online still. Fuck.

I’m just as bummed as the rest of NS, but you gotta look at it from the ski areas perspective. If you shut down the lodges and only run lifts, in mid March, where is their revenue going to come from? We’re past the point of the season of significant ticket sales, it’d mostly be passholders, and lifts cost to run. I really wish they’d do it, definitely not ready for lift served skiing to be done for the season, but there’s reasons why they arent

Good point, it's also pretty common in skiing to cross state lines and travel to get to the mountains so it makes sense they don't want a bunch of people from possibly infected areas around their mountain. Would be pretty bad publicity if an outbreak strted at a mountain somewhere

Probably half of the bay area is/was in Tahoe to ski right now. I wish theyd have shut down a day ir two earlier. We'd have had way less people, less if a shitshow, snd would have saved those people the hassle.

Looking forward to being able to go shopping after the weekend. People were going to disregard anything about travel and travel to sli for sure though. It's shitty but this all makes sense given the current situation.

Pretty sad that my season and my summer season might both be shot. But more jist hoping they contain this shit and get the world back to normal with minimal impact.
