Man, you just fucking eat up all the bullshit he spews don't you?
Hope? That's the lamest fucking excuse I've ever heard. You don't tout the shit he does because it's false hope.
A vaccine? Anyone with a hint of medical knowledge knows that's 12-18 months away. Telling people there's a vaccine soon (which he said on March 2nd) means people may not take this disease seriously because they think it'll be all over relatively quickly.
A treatment? A person died because of the shit he said on TV. A 60 year old man took a form of chloroquine, along with his wife, because they heard Trump talk about it on TV. Again, you also run the risk of people not taking the disease seriously because they think it can be treated. There's conflicting clinical evidence about the effectiveness of HCQ and ARVs in treating COVID-19.
What he should have been doing, from the start, was not downplaying the situation.
Here are some of his quotes vs. what experts said
Trump:
“We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It’s going to be just fine,”
-Trump
Experts:
The main reason for this declaration is not because of what is happening in China, but because of what is happening in other countries
-WHO Director
This virus is probably with us beyond this season, beyond this year
- CDC Director
Trump:
We’re going down, not up. We’re going very substantially down, not up.” As they get better, we take them off the list, so that we’re going to be pretty soon at only five people. And we could be at just one or two people over the next short period of time.”
“It’s going to disappear. One day — it’s like a miracle — it will disappear. And from our shores, we — you know, it could get worse before it gets better. It could maybe go away. We’ll see what happens. Nobody really knows.”
Reality:
We can expect to see more cases in the United States.
- Head of the HHS
It’s not so much a question of if this will happen anymore but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness
- Director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases
Trump
“Well, I think the 3.4 percent is really a false number. Now, and this is just my hunch, and, but based on a lot of conversations with a lot of people that do this, because a lot people will have this and it’s very mild. I think the number, personally, I would say the number is way under 1 percent"
So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!
Experts:
The seasonal flu is also much less deadly. Using the CDC’s estimates of this flu season, the mortality rate of the seasonal flu this year is somewhere between 0.04 percent (23,000 deaths out of 53 million infections) or 0.16 percent (59,000 deaths out of 38 million infections). Data compiled by Johns Hopkins University put the current mortality rate of the coronavirus in the United States at about 1.2 percent — 600 deaths from about 50,000 cases.
Trump on March 15th
This is a very contagious virus. It’s incredible. But it’s something we have tremendous control of.”
Experts:
The worst is, yes, ahead for us. It is how we respond to that challenge that’s going to determine what the ultimate endpoint is going to be.
- Dr. Fauci
Do I need to continue?
This has been a massive failing by Trump. There's in no way, shape, or form, that people with any semblance of knowledge about how this shit should have gone can say he has done a good job.
This is a disaster of his own making.
He had experts warning him back in January about the potential ramifications of COVID-19. He ignored them.
He had warnings about how his tariffs would impact medical supplies in event of an emergency. He ignored them.
He had a NSC Pandemic team. He disbanded it.
The list goes on, and on, and on.
Don't give me some bullshit about providing "hope". False hope does no one any good. Provide some semblance of stability. Tell us the reality of the situation and how you're going to address it. Don't give us platitudes and barren words. Give us a fucking plan backed by experts.
No impartial expert is out there proclaiming that we can handle an Easter date to restart the economy. It'd be a disaster.
I never thought I'd show Cuomo as an example of a politician handling a situation well but here we are.
That is how Trump should be behaving. Instead he's throwing tantrums on social media and in press conferences.
