How come carbon fiber and other newly discovered materials havent replaced wood as the main core material?

It is you just can’t afford it. G3 makes a full carbon ski. I think DPS did. No need to replace wood it’s perfect for what it is being used for.

Wood is a great material in general and especially for skis because it can bend without breaking well and is very strong compared to its weight. Some companies use carbon stringers and there are some that use a lot of carbon fiber but mostly it isnt worth it

I would never pay more than 400 for skis. But anyways, dont wood cores get noodly over time? Carbon fiber isnt that expensive... if it was, even a glass fiber reinforced resin i imagine could outcompete a wood core.

dont even get me started on bamboo. I dont know how you make bamboo work as a core— its fucking hollow for Christ sake.

Wood is definitely cheaper than carbon fiber though. Plus how would you get pop out of a glass fiber enforced resin. It’s like those resin skate decks they suck and no one wants them unless it’s a penny board.

Alot of skate pros have been using carbon fiber reinforced decks for years now.



as for pop i would be surprised if there wasnt any non wood layup that could still pop/have elastic recoil. Look at tennis racquets. They have been 100% carbon for years and they are super elastic

What exactly do you think wood is if not a matrix of lignin and cellulose filled with air?

Have you rode a full carbon ski? they ski like shit imo....wayyy to light to ride properly in resort. Really good for touring though

Somewhat related but corvettes for the longest time have used fiberglass leaf springs in their suspension design. Wouldn't be too hard to make a composite 'pop'

Man my G3 Carbon Empire 115 are my favourite ski. So light, swing weight is so mellow, you hit a side hit and feel like you can float forever. grabs and tweaks became so easy. when I switch over to my 2013 petitor 122 those things are freaking tanks and I can't do shit on them.

You want a certain amount of dampness to a ski. It's why carbon ultralight skis are so chattery and ski like shit on hard pack. Wood has the right amount of vibration absorption, flex and weight. A full fiberglass/carbon ski would be ridiculously stiff if it were thick enough to even resemble any normal ski.

Full carbon skis still have a wood core.

Most skis: wood + fiberglass + carbon stringers

Full carbon skis: wood + carbon

Full carbon just means the lack of fiberglass in the build.
