patagonialukeI'm not sure why they made it with the geometry it has, but I am sure it wasn't to work with boots like the Backland (pictured above) since those short-souled, ultralight touring boots aren't compatible with MNC bindings (Tyrolia AT, Salomon / Atomic Warden, Marker Sole ID) anyway.

DolanReloadedIm pretty sure the toe isnt meant to release vertically. If it did that would be a horribly engineered way to go about it.
FaunaSkisthe vertical release is in addtion to the lateral to release and is good for underotating backies and diagonal releases like when you're back seat and catch your inside edge, a kind of fall, which without the vertical release, is prime for tearing ligaments in your knee, because of the shearing force on your knee.
