I used to have 10 pairs of skis and bought all the latest movies and all I cared about was skiing. Then I got busy with an aviation career and have barely touched snow in years. In fact I went to flight school with Ian Cosco which was pretty hilarious. Sean Petit, TJ Schiller, Eric Pollard, Mark Abma, Seth Morrison, and Henrik Harlaut were my favourite skiers or at least the big names I remember and the last movie I watched was Attack of La Niña.

So...
-who are best skiers today that I should know about
-what are the latest big tricks or breakthroughs or has it plateaud at all
-any significant ski or equipment innovations/technology
-and lastly what are some must see ski movies I need to see to catch up on?

SLVSH is one of the best things in skiing and it will update you quick it's like a game of skate they also do a cup. There are lots of movies to choose from but I would say check out Keeshlife!

Rockered skis are everything now. This community has moved to more of a microbrew ski company scene (ON3P, Vishnu, Moment, etc.) the big companies sponsor the comp jocks and still have a few of the old athletes left on their teams. Tricks have went to a more small technical level (butters, one footers stuff like that) but the comp scene is still the same doubles and triples. Annual ski movie releases are as good as dead, Level 1 is done putting out annual films along with most other companies.

And the biggest thing is skiing is still as fun as it ever was.

Damn so it really has plateau’d. That sucks about the movie scene but I guess almost everything has been done before at this point. I miss those classic movies like the Ski Movie Series, Yearbook, Focused, Shanghai 6, or High Five, best soundtracks ever. Those were the days. I lived in Banff, Alberta for 2 years and skied 40+ days each winter at the Big 3, Revy, and the Horse. It absolutely dumped and all my dreams came true in those seasons.

There are actually tons of ski movies being released every year, they're just all online. I love all of those old movies you listed and I find tons of sick new ski movies every year, and IMO soundtracks are better than ever

things have plateaued and focus has gone more toward smaller wackier stuff, but dubs and trips have continued to progress and jump skiing is at a crazy high level

candide still drops a dope clip here and there. tanner is still goin hard, he went back to chad's a couple years ago and stomped a dub backy. henrik harlaut is still one of the sickest park skiers ever

if you want some newer park guys to watch, definitely check out alex hall, colby stevenson, quinn wolferman. all 3 of those dudes are insanely sick

tons of good free content online, so the good news is your catch-up viewing can be done almost entirely for free

Urban has regressed to very small features that are 4 inches off the ground.

RealSkifi had a huge influence in Scandinavia and now there is a breed of strange skiing going on that has made it's way across the ocean to North America.

Thrifting has become a huge part of skiing and snowpants are no longer a thing.

It's a strange world.

I dont think it has plateau'd. It has just shifted focus a bit. The blowup of social media changed a lot about how media is produced and released, including fewer big production annual movies, but plenty of smaller awesome projects and many more athletes can get their name out there. I don't think there is as much money in skiing but people still make it happen. Freestyle is less derogatory and looked upon in a brighter light by the outside, take that as you want. Generally, parks are built better, but I think they're also more full of Jerrys and their dangerous kids

Colby Stevenson and Alex Hall are dominating the comp scene with incredibly tech rail skills combined with original grabs in dialled doubles and triples. They are also putting out video parts every year.
Quinn Wolferman, Ferdinand Dahl and Elias Syrja are some favourited for style and bringing flavour to comps.
Keeshlife and another Finnish crew called Forre are putting out the top notch urban content.
B-Dog is still the style and urban GOAT.
Tanner Hall is on the freeride world tour.
Kimbo Sessions has picked up where super park/orage masters/ spring park shoots left off.
The new model for ski movies seems to be a talented filmer/producer working with one or a few athletes and releasing a movie online for free.

I really am looking forward to getting back into skiing. My hobbies have really suffered. A lot of money spent on going out, drinks, eating out, dating, travelling, etc. This job has been go go go since the start and you generally make shit money for the first few years and a lot of time was spent in backwater towns building hours. One time in the middle of bumfuck nowhere Northwest Territories though my colleagues and I built a little kicker and I stomped a front flip out of nowhere and everyone went berserk. That was fun.

Not really current in any way, but you seem to have dipped out of the community before STEPT hit their peak in like 2014-2016ish.

To this day I dont think their urban stuff has been topped in terms of gnarliness, mostly due to the above mentioned transition into more accessible urban (and also because I just generally don't know if its possible to go bigger). They transformed into a commercial production company now and work on some really legit stuff but nobody is doing shit close to what they did anymore.

It was a glorious time for skiing and I HIGHLY reccomend going to find some of their stuff. (Clayton Vila's mutiny seg is free online and is the best Urban part of all time IMO)

a lot of great stuff already mentioned, but here is a few more things:

gear-wise, every shape of ski seems to exist (twin tip, early rise with partial twin tip, etc, full rocker, rocker-camber-rocker etc) and with that there is all these categories for skis these days (freeride, freestyle, piste, all mountain, etc). not necessarily a bad thing

there has been an uptick in the desire to develop a full alpine touring binding - see Atomic/Solomon Shift for example

this will be criticized but i find that TGR and Red Bull still produce a lot of good content, Ski the East puts out awesome stuff as well!

resort consolidation, see Epic/IKON pass for example

in general, it seems there are a lot more strong skiers where strong skiers are to be found. i think people are getting a lot better, a lot faster for whatever reason

The gap between current urban snowboarding and current urban skiing is as big as the gap between male and female halfpipe skiing 4 years ago.

We have regressed. it's true and we all know it. Real skifi was just so damn hot that the bunch just had to take after em.

When did real skifi start? The Bunch started before LSM and Magnus got their super unknown wins, which was in 2012 and 2013.

The Bunch's transition into thrift-store-chic was 100% inspired by skateboarding. Specifically the rise of the Supreme crew (the actual skate team, not the dick-riding hypbeast that buy resale) and the no-comply/cuffed jeans/rubber toe-capped shoe trends that were going on in skating around that time.

Its gotten a little more hectic; mountain town communities blown up, multi resort passes, congestion issues, climate change, diminishing snowpacks, all sorts of fun stuff, but theres still people out there finding their way and still keeping true to the game and true to skiing.


FWT and freeriding in general is blowing up and the level of skiing now is just unreal. Park/Pipe skiing is straight gas nowadays, too. This years WC circuit and Comp circuit really displays how insane the level of comp skiing is and just skiing in general. Quite impressive honestly. We're skiing a lot harder and faster than ever before I feel like.

I don't think the skiing done in those is very representative of skiing rn. However, the style of edit sure is. Lotta work into a single or a couple athletes making a short film
