Ikon base pass loses Jackson Hole and Aspen/Snowmass, prices increase

Man, looks like Ikon base pass lost JH and Aspen/Snowmass, but you can add 5 days at each for $150. Super lame.

Wow. I thought that the IKON pass was pitched to be Aspen's baby, similar to the way Epic is to vail. Thats unfortunate

Inb4 a bunch of people rip the ikon stickers off their cars. Live how people pretended it was totally different than epic. Good vs. Evil. Their both just corporations.

Surprised on aspen though as I was also under the impression that there was some sort of merger with ksl to start Altera. I guess either not, or they just reallized they'd make more money off those mtns without it. Idk aspen is dope as duck. Ajax and highlands for lyfe, snoqmass in there with killer parks.

That said jhole impressed the fuck out of me with their park. Didnt go for park obviously but spent some time in there and it was flowy af.

which park are you referring to?

They used to have quite a decent park under the gondola but for at least 2 seasons they scrapped that and crammed everything into where the mini park is off Teewinot. I agree its not what you go to Jackson for but still super lame

Honestly this is good for Jackson, my aunt works there in marketing and said how since the icon and in the last few years, they’ve had more people than they could handle reaching limits on people that can be at the mountain. This will definitely be good for them to have the right amount of people.

Im not an Alta local, buttt ive heard rumors Alta is buying out of ikon but the bird is staying. Could be wrong. Just a rumor I heard here in Utah.

The main one. I do remember the small park in that one trail not being that dope. Sucks that got the axe.

I don’t think this really will change much. It’s only another $150 add on. Which is really nothing. I’ll probably add it on as I like to take a trip to both most winters.

Pass is still cheap and you get a ton for your money.

Last year I traveled a lot for work and picked up the IKON pass. Spending close to 1G on a pass was a lot but knew I would get my money out of it.

Was at Aspen for 3 days last season. $179 a day is the online price. That’s $537 or over half the pass cost. It sucks that they lost Aspen apart of the base pass, but $150 is still a bargain.

I was expecting something to happen with Deer Valley this season, like loosing it all together.

I have had the base pass for the past two seasons and I am actually glad this happened. I spent some time at JH last season and it was an absolute shitshow, I don't think I would ever return if it remained on the base pass. Having to get in line at 7am on a powder day in order to ski any fresh tracks is wack. I really hope this helps a bit. I also spent some time at Aspen (Snowmass and Highlands) and there was absolutely no crowd issue, so I am not really sure why they are doing this.

I don't think this was intended to, or will, help with the crowding issue. All the data produced by JH and Big Ski last year indicated the increase in crowds was due to a lot more locals skiing because it was an epic snow year. Everyone blamed the passes, but the resorts said the huge increase was not because of the Ikon pass. So this seems entirely directed at Alterra making more money on the base pass, rather than addressing the crowding issue.

I don't know why any others would consent to continue the relationship if they aren't Alterra owned. Jackson Hole has always been bad and that tram has always had 2+ hour waits if you like East coast bro dudes and dudettes its the place to be.

Anyways this only effects me indirectly but I think giving special treatment to those two will be the downfall of the Ikon. Which has been good for skiing the Epic having an equal competitor is good. The selfish behavior of ski town locals is bad for the sport the crowds are mostly caused by all of you skiing at the same time and not the folks who visit to pump money into your economies and give you jobs.

I thought the parks were fine. Yea it was kind of small but it was super dialed. Also the wood parks they have were kinda cool. I didn't think jackson even had a park until I saw it and it was nice to cut through it while lapping the gondola.

I mean literally the first couple results in a google search were this:

But they all say the same thing. If you look around for 5 seconds, you'll see that most of the resort reported data says the same thing. Increases in skier visits because of the Ikon pass are all like 9% to 15%, while local pass holders accounted for closer to 40% of the increase.

Probably for the best honestly, but it does kinda suck. $150 for 5 days still is pretty good and you can easily make that back up by just packing your own lunches if you take a trip out. Still kinda sucks that you have to pay though with the pass.

Really? I mean what do you consider a bay area Ikon/Epic pass holder as someone who lives in Tahoe they aren't exactly tourists?

Jackson Hole was ridiculous and a 2 hour tram wait before the Ikon. I went Feb vacation week and got the Motel 6 in Jackson for under 40/night. I'm sure it would be higher now but those were locals creating the 2 hour wait because it snowed. If there were shit tons of tourists I would not have found dirt cheap lodging.

If it snows a foot in January the dude who lives 5 miles down the road who hasn't skiied yet all winter is coming out and so is everyone he knows. The Ikon holder who works 9-5 is not booking a flight on 48 hours notice to jam up your lift line.

It made no sense for Jackson to join the Ikon. It was already a destination and it didn't benefit the locals at all. I live in the east and it is perfect, it gives me days at some of the best mountains out here, and gives me the opportunity to take a trip out west. If you ski CO or UT, it is also a great option and it is a no brainer to take a couple of weekend trips to Jackson. I just think it doesn't make sense to have a mountain on a pass that is remote and isn't around other mountains also on that pass. Making the CO and UT weekend trippers shell out an additional $150 seems pretty reasonable and fair to me. They already have dope mountains to ski.

If you talk to the locals at Jackson, they will tell you how much it changed once they joined the Ikon. I know locals at most mountains say this, but I believed them at JH and they didn't seem like they were just being pretentious assholes.

It was already too crowded and they are pretentious assholes in general Ikon or no Ikon. Every day I got there early to ride the tram but the lines were always too long to take a second lap on it. Great terrain but that ruined it for me I just can't stand in a line for 90 minutes.

I am sure its in their best interest to not be on the base I am just making the point that the Ikon as a whole is making a mistake to give preferential treatment. Big Sky for example look like absolute cucks for not being add ons like JH and Aspen.

yeah I think the problem is that the JH "locals" are kids who moved there after going to an elite liberal arts school in the east and now they complain about IKON when they are actually to blame for the crowds hahahahaha
