I was recently skiing at Rusutsu, Hokkaido, Japan (/Claim) and I spotted this dude in a flashy 70s yellow onesie with a crazy red/white samuri patch on his back with his poles wrapped in xmas garland. Naturally, I approached him and took a peak at his setup and his bindings were mounted backward on a pair of straight skis. I rode the gondola with him and he gave me his business card. Asatorah Akiba (AKA Backward Ski Man) New Generation Ski Pioneer. Evidently, he has been riding backwards everyday, every season around Hokkaido since the 70s. legend!!
Are there any advantages to skiing backwards? According to Akiba-san there are many – enough to fill a booklet to encourage others. Good points include: “When you ski backwards you can interact with other skiers face-to face (handy if an attractive person skies by); you can take videos of others more easily; and you can see the tracks you have made in the snow.”

If this pic is as old as it might possibly be from the 70s... Looks like he bent up the tails and has a twin tip. He could've been one of the only people to do that for more than 20 years
