Does the Sickbird award still exist?

Now that SFS and Freeskiing World Tour are pretty much dead? As far as I know, Sickbird has never been awarded in FWQ or Freeride World Tour.

kind of compete in a bunch of junior freeride comps and theres some bullshit sickbird award called the “spirtbird” award but its about like cheering people on and sportsman ship but not the same my coach flipped a pillow drop in a qualifier comp in 09 and he got the award so its no longer about being a sick skier just a good guy pretty wack in my opinion tho

neither. on the fwq a few of the comps will give a secondary award that can be for sick skiing but can be for other stuff too. headwaters might still give a proper sickbird though, based on sending it/crowd pleasing skiing.

i haven't seen one at a 4 star in a long time. crystal does an "excenlante" award, but rarely is it for skiing alone.

Yeah all the canadian comps have the "spirit bird" award which as some have said is often awarded for things more along the lines of sportsmanship than actually sending it. However there is often a correlation, and a lot of the time if someone has a super sick run but crashes they'll get the award. I think some of the American comps still have proper "sick bird" awards that are like what you'd expect, whoever does the sickest thing gets the award, which in my opinion is way better. The IFSA has defs tried to distance themselves from anything that promotes sending stuff beyond your skill level, and thus less and less real sick bird awards unfortunately

it's an award given by the organizers. can be from consistent skiing, sportsmanship, overcoming injury, champion of stoke, or on occasion crazy lines.

It's mostly up to the company putting on the comp. Where I worked they had to get rid of them because too many people were getting way hurt sending stuff out of their league just to go for sickbird.

It got to the point where a good portion of the comp would just Huck their meat into really subpar conditions/landings with very little attempt at landing. It defeated the purpose of the comps if nobody is actually trying to ski and it was mad dangerous.


However I've completed in qualis that had it. Just depends on the specific comp.
