Goggles fog up immediately when it's cold

I used to have Smith Squads which I loved. Lost them and so I bought Giro Axis because I expected them to fit with my Giro helmet well and I liked the tint and visibility of them.
Every single day that I've been out where the temperature is below 20, they fog up immediately. Not the outer or inner surface that you can wipe off, the surface between the two layers. I can go to the blow drier and it fixes it until I step outside again. I find this unacceptable and don't know what to do. Goggles that are 5 months old and $180 should not be doing this. I can post pics next time I ski and it's cold

I’m no goggle expert but it sounds like a ventilation problem to me. If a dryer will clear them, that’s like air circulating when moving. Do you wear a balaclava? Or in some other way are obstructing the vents? Sorry about the problem man it sucks when you can’t see!

Regardless of price all goggles can fog. I would bet you have ventilation/overheating problems.

SessionRegardless of price all goggles can fog. I would bet you have ventilation/overheating problems.


I would think this too except on they fog like this before I even put them on. Like literally as soon as I take them out of the bag theyre fucked. I'm not exaggerating. On warmer days even with my face mask when I breathe onto them and they get a little fogged, it goes away almost right away like they're supposed to do

How sweaty of a guy are you when you ski/how hard are you skiing? My fogging issues usually stem from being so damn sweaty from skiing a bunch or on powdays when ice/snow builds up around the vents but you dont wanna go ripping chunks of ice off your goggles because youll rip out the foam. I now just bring a 2nd set of frames + lens with me to keep in my truck or pack just in case and switch off

The only times I seem to have my goggles kinda fog up before even using them is when I leave them in the car overnight, without drying them well from the previous day skiing. We do a lot of car camping hence leaving gear in the car but some days I remember to dry them out good on the dash, sometimes I leave them sorta wet loose in my helmet or wrapped in a face mask.

yeah I second this, make sure your goggles are dry overnight

I would speak to the shop you bought the goggles from. It sounds like the seal between your lenses has blown and damp air is getting between them. Even if you dry them out it’s still going to come back. Did this just start out of nowhere or did you have crash or something where your goggles got an impact? If it’s just happened, it could be a case for a warranty, even if there’s visible impact damage, it’s still worth asking your Giro dealer to see if they’ll sort a replacement lens.

Epic Mtn sports prolly doesnt give a damn about me 6 months later and theyre 2 states away.. do you think putting something like tape over the edges would help seal it?

nah if they are fogging so regularly they are pretty much fucked

It wouldn’t hurt to contact giro directly and ask them for advice. They may hook you up, Electric helped me out a few years ago on a lens.

I have a pair of Axis as well and this has happened to me. Only because my lens was not all the on the goggle frame. One of the four notches was not fully in the frame. Once i figured that out they work fine.

Dry your goggles. Take them out of your ski bag, out of their microfiber pouch and let them air dry overnight. This will 100% solve your issue.

I went from giros TO squads for this very reason. Couldn't keep them from fogging to save my life. But this sounds like a warrenty issue, does it happen with both lenses or just one?

Both but my low lights are worse. I just noticed they do have a crack in the corner but that doesn't explain it for the high vis ones. Oh well I'll try contacting them

I had to straight up pull the foam off the top vents for mine not to fog. I forgot the model but I dropped good coin on them and was pissed when they were worse than my ancient bolle's. They looked good tho. Wanted to like them bad because of how much cash I spent on them. Good luck man

freeskibum82Dry your goggles. Take them out of your ski bag, out of their microfiber pouch and let them air dry overnight. This will 100% solve your issue.


What these guys said. Every goggle will do this, no matter what brand or how expensive. There is nothing wrong with the seal between the lenses. You need to take your goggles out and let them sit in the open air and dry. I bet you skied on a snowy or wet day and left them in the goggle bag.

This happened with a ballin pair of Spy Soldiers that I had way back in the day, gave them away because I got annoyed. Then I found out why it was happening. Ever since I starting taking my goggles out of my bag every time after skiing I have never had this issue.
